Hi. I am having a lot of trouble with the Rexton Reach hearing aids. They over emphasize some sounds like blenders, car horns, etc. so much that the sounds heart my ears. When listening to someone speak sometimes their voice becomes so loud it is as if they are yelling. I don’t know whether to try a different brand or work on proper adjustment of these.
I’ve had them for about 2 months. I have used hearing aids for almost 5 years. My last pair were the Kirklands. I did not have this problem with the Kirklands. They were almost 5 years old so I wanted to get more up to date aids and was worried that the life span of the Kirklands was just about up. In addition, I have lost a little bit more hearing in one ear.
It sounds like your mid frequencies are over amplified. This is not inherent in the Rextons. Have you followed up with Costco? If they can’t take care of you, maybe see if an independant audiologist can tune it for you.
Thanks so much. I have seen them and am going again tomorrow. The specialist there is quite good but whenever I complain about the noises vs speech being loud she does say that blenders, etc. are loud. However, I know that they should not be so loud that they hurt my ears. I am most interested in not working hard to hear conversations or my students (I teach cancer patients and survivors). Independent audiologist - thank you for this suggestion. I am in the process of trying to find one that will not try to sell me hearing aids. Any suggestions as to how to find one that is truly independent? Thanks again!!

Your hearing aids have three different loudness level inputs. It would seem that the 80 levels need to be adjusted down a few dB.
Note, that since you came from the old Kirkland hearing aids, the Sennheiser brand may work out better for you. However, they are old technology. You can return the Rextons for a refund and then purchase the Sennheiser.
Hi. Thanks so much for your input and suggestions. I don’t have a digital copy right now. I’ll ask for one. However, I have a couple of questions. Why are you suggesting the Sennheiser? Why not the Philips or Jabra? Also, I don’t really want old technology. One of the reasons I got newer aids is because of the technological changes. Thanks again. Oh - are you an audiologist?
Thanks so much. I read in another post that the person was experiencing basically the same problems I am having. She or he has switched to the Sennheiser and loves them - along with others. I rewatched the video about these aids and did more research (I’ve spent weeks and months researching everything), regarding their technology. Here is some of the what I found.
“Based on proven technology:
The Sonite R is built on the Phonak Paradise platform, which is older than the newest Phonak models, but still provides a robust set of features.
Rechargeable:
The hearing aids use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries with contact charging, addressing some of the issues with older rechargeable models, and offering up to 18 hours of use on a single charge.
Bluetooth connectivity:
They feature direct Bluetooth connectivity to smartphones and other devices.
Advanced features:
Despite using a previous platform, the Sonite R includes advanced features such as -powered noise reduction, directional microphones, and a Speech Manager that focuses on the direction of the speaker.”
As tenkan stated, the Kirklands are rebranded Phonak and so are the Sennheiser hearing aids. If you look at some of the other posts, you will see that folks coming from Kirklands seem to be happier with the Sennheiser hearing aids if they are having issues.
Part of it is they are use to the sound of the Phonak hearing aids and some of is due to the initial manufactures recommended settings, which Costco will initially set your hearing aids to.
You can go to the section here on this website and ask for a copy of the programming software. Note I am not asking you to self-program your hearing aid, but for you to see how many adjustments that can be made to your hearing aids. You will see that there is one heck of a lot of adjustments available to your hearing aid fitter to get your hearing aid dialed in.
I am not a hearing aid fitter or a doctor of audiology. I have self-programed my Philips 9040 hearing aids.
As far as old technology, our first priority is the hear without hurting. After that, for others, it may be hearing in noisy restaurants, and compatibility with their old Bluetooth devices. For me, is a priority.
HI. Thanks again for your information!! I am just back from a lengthy appointment at Costcos. I am trying out the Philips for a few days. I would also like to try the Sennheiser aids just to see. However, I was told by the specialist that the Sennheisers are “very loud.” And, because I was having loudness issues with the Rextons she thought I would not do well with the Sennheiser. By the time the appointment was drawing to an end I was very tired from explaining and trying to use the right words to describe my issues. I would like to know “loud” in what way - background noise, extraneous noise, speech, etc??? I’m hoping to convince her to let me also try the Sennheiser. I did read a lot of posts on this site about the Sennheiser. Thanks also for the tip on programming software. You must be very talented that you can self-program. I’m not sure I could do this. I am going to look and then perhaps, bring the info to my specialist at Costco. She was willing to take the information I printed out about Rexton that was in more detail than what I have been presented with. Thanks again!
HI. Thanks again for your information!! I am just back from a lengthy appointment at Costcos. I am trying out the Philips for a few days.
I also have rextons and are thinking about switching. How did your switch go? You just asked? They gave you a loaner set without having to buy the Phillips? Did they keep your Rextons while you had the Phillips?
Hi. I went in and explained my issues and the specialist ultimately suggested that I try the Philips because she couldn’t really do more to adjust the Rextons. And yes, they have my Rextons and I had to sign a paper that indicated the Philips are on loan.. I am trying the Philips for a couple of days. I’m also hoping to try the Sennheiser - we’ll see. I hope you get to try the Philips. What type of issues are you having with the Rextons?
At the top of the the main page here, you will see categories. From there, you can access the section. The folks there will be able to assist you. So far no one has asked for any money.
see. I hope you get to try the Philips. What type of issues are you having with the Rextons?
I have noticed the same things with the rextons, not to the point where it hurt, but stepping on leaves, blenders, any buzzer, like from the car seatbelt alarm to the beep of an electric tea kettle to the bathroom vent fan are very loud,
But what is the dealbreaker for me is I don’t like the way the Rexton hearing aid sits on the top of my ear.
Before I chose the Rextons I walked around Costco with the Phillips and the jabra’s for 10 minutes. I would probably try the Jabras next.
