Periodic whistle from one hearing aid

I have Phonak Bolero M hearing aids, supplied a couple of years ago by the NHS in Scotland. A couple of weeks ago the left began to emit a high-pitched whistle. This happens periodically, mainly if I move my hand near, but not touching, the HA. Can anyone suggest why this is occurring?

Did you change wax traps just before the whistle? I have noted that an improperly seated wax traps can cause issues - mostly crackling sounds.

I use the Phonak Bolero M90 rechargeable aids too, and they work just fine.

It sounds like feedback. Are you using vented domes or ear molds? Also have you changed anything recently like going to a different type of dome or tubes?

If you have changed anything, your audiologist should do new feedback tests and adjust your settings accordingly.

Could be your LEFT unit needs replacing or repair if it’s been in use a couple years. Since the feedback has started recently, something has changed: the shape of your ear canal, the tip of the speaker unit (warped, not providing a tight seal), or even the unit failure as Feedback Management is no longer working on that unit.

With these options, maybe you could get in to an audi to see if they can run the Feedback Management program, check the fit of the aid, and get the unit repaired or replaced as needed. Phonaks typically come with a 2-yr warranty. GOOD LUCK and GET IN THERE to fix it.

Thanks 1Bluejay (and the previous respondent). That’s very helpful. I’ll make an appointment with the Audiology Dept. and see if the left unit needs to be replaced - or perhaps both at the same time.
