Any chance we could introduce a forum rule about AI content

workable solution
Not directly by the forum operators, but guessing that whoever built the forum software is likely already working on ai ID features. In the meantime, my finger would tire from using the scroll wheel to skip over verbose stuff, ai or otherwise if I didn’t use my left hand on a Spacemouse for that. Expensive but worth it for use in CAD and Google Earth.

From reading the posts about it appears to be a misuse of AI rather than AI in general.
No one seems to be mad at AI. Members are more or less big or little users of AI. I personally appreciate AI but don’t quote it anywhere.

Agreed. To me the issue is when people treat as a reliable source instead of as something you’re crazy uncle might have said. If it’s interesting or potentially useful, verify before sharing (in your own words) The problem with rules is that ideally they would be subtle and deal with all contingencies. The people that we are concerned with don’t seem to get subtlety.

@jim_lewis as someone that has seen what can is really capable of I can see it taking over the world and deciding who lives are dies. You are already see it happen with drones. Yes unfortunately it is here to stay. It can be really helpful but it also has a really evil side too.

Chuck, I think most of the stuff done with weapons is still planned, initiated, and guided (at least by the weighing and testing done for any part) by human beings. Nuclear weapons and climate change are currently two much greater existential threats to humanity, yet humans have an amazing ability to push concerns in those departments out of their minds. India and Pakistan duke it out with their more limited supply of nukes: 1 to 2 billion people are going to die. If Russia and the U.S. duke it out, an estimated 5 billion people, if not all of us, are going to die. Yet you’d rather lose sleep over AI?! All the killings that have been done by one group of humans over another group or groups of humans down through the millennia essentially show that, so far, we’re our own worst enemy.

Well said. is totally overrated, bit like (remember that?) the Millennium bug, which was supposed to cause airplanes to fall from the sky and stop hospitals from working. The impact of new tech is usually overstated, and always misjudged.

I think this thread is getting off track enough that it’s veering into politics and will likely get shut down. I’d suggest doing it preemptively. We’ve got the poll going and comments are available on it.

We seem to have two threads on this issue. Here’s what I posted in the other thread (where Abram asked “Should we completely ban generated content in the forum?”), suggesting three key points:
- Say what prompt/s the AI was given - was it asked for sources? was it asked not to make up answers if it can’t access a reliable source (yes, you should always do that - ChatGPT 5.2 recommends to prefix your prompt with “No guessing. Cite or say you’re unsure”) ?
- Condense key points
- Say what the poster makes of the generated response/s

Yeah, Abram could always fuse the threads. But since there are many threads on the forum that duplicate user hearing aid experience and concerns, but each has its own flavor, I don’t see great harm in having two threads on “Should we curtail or ban ?” and cross-referencing them as appropriate.
Since “campaigning” for the policy formulated from the vote outcome is taking place in the other thread, here’s what I posted there about avoiding the fate of the Washington Post by users increasingly turning to AI and potentially not finding what they’re looking for here:
In a PM discussion several years ago with @AbramBaileyAuD, I pointed out to him that incorporating skillful and useful AI into this forum might help it survive in the long term, rather than outright banning AI for, IMHO, questionable reasons. In initial posts about the current discussion, Abram stated that, under the right conditions and with the right AI, he himself found it useful. I’m making this post now because I read yesterday that the Washington Post laid off 30% of its workforce, incl…
