Turn off iPhone alert pings on my Phonak hearing aids
18 replies643 viewsLast reply
I made two automations in the Shortcuts app that change system volume when my hearing aids connect or disconnect. That is the streaming connection, but the volume is for notifications and alarms. It does not effect the streaming volume.
If you set the volume to 0 when they connect and back to the default when they disconnect that should more per less have the effect you are after.
Create the automation in the shortcut app by searching for Bluetooth , select device, select Connected or disconnected and Run immediately.
Search for Set Volume as action.

You make perfect sense, but I need “Instructions For Dummies”. Are you able to do this for me? Many thanks.

Under Settings…Notifications…you can set for each app what notifications it is allowed to produce. Use this to only allow critical apps to “get through”, or you get beeped all day long… Also, when installing new apps it is a good habit to answer “Send notifications?” with NO.

Yes! We can do simple!
I myself use it to set volume to 50% when connected, but I found even setting it to 0 will still result in a soft notification over my hearing aids. So we wil set Focus mode on when connected. And off when disconnected.
Open the shortcuts app
Press Automations at the bottom of the page
Press the + sign
Search for Bluetooth in the search box and press the only result.
At the top select your hearing aids from the list (not sure they need to be connected at that moment)
Make sure Connected is selected and Disconnected is not.
Select Run immediately
Select Next
Press New Shortcut
In the searchbox search for Focus and select Set Focus.
Make sure it says Turn Do Not Disturb On until Turned off
Press the checkmark. Your first automation is ready!
Now repeat all steps but make sure under Bluetooth you select Disconnected and not Connected.
Under set Focus make sure it says Turn Do Not Disturb Off
Now your second automation is ready.
You will get a pop up each time a notification runs. Nothing you can do about that.
Let me know if this helps. I recorded a video5 also.

Not sure if you were expecting the notifications coming from the iPhone speaker. That is not possible when your hearing aids are connected ( for audio, connection to the Phonak app has no influence).
I can adapt the instructions to lower notification volume while hearing aids are connected so it does not sound so incredibly LOUD! That is what I normally use.

“Shortcuts app” I don’t have that, but when I search in settings, a choice is App shortcuts. Is that the one you meant? The choices from the bottom of this list are settings, messages, my files, Utube, maps, not set, tips, settings (again), one UI home, search, gmail, one UI home (again) contacts and chrome. Do I have to load the app or just hit+z etc. that are listed for each of them? I see that when I touch the settings, it opens to all of my apps and says “select app”. So I selected Facebook which has the loudest most painful sound, and it sent me back to the list above.? Maybe a video is needed, although my 5-year-old S21 rarely has the commands that I see in videos - is that a Canadian thing with Samsung?

Sorry, Samsung S21 is an Android phone. My instructions only work on an (Apple) iPhone.
If you want notifications through your phone speaker instead of your headphones you should be able to do that through a Samsung app called sound assistant. You can download it from the galaxy store on your S21 phone.
There are also apps that can probably turn off notifications if you connect to your hearing aid, but I hope some Android users on this forum might be able to help you with that.

Settings/apps/facebook/notifications allows me to turn it off. I like the notification, but not delivered at FB’s high volume and their choice of ear-piercing sound.

I used this for the pings and it worked perfectly.
Per-App Settings1: Go to Settings > Notifications, tap an app, and toggle off “Allow Notifications” or customize sounds/banners.
Thanks so much!!!

Yes, by far the easiest approach. And when installing new apps, ensure you de-select “Allow notifications” that they usually insist on.

A question so for example my widex hearing aids the iphone defaults to the speaker for alerts because I turned off play system sounds, for the phonak is it different more like apple airpods?

Phonaks are different because they use Bluetooth classic instead of the Apple Bluetooth LE.
When use MFi , Apple provides multiple features (integrated with the OS) that can manage the hearing aids, including notifications management , balance , volume , programs, etc .
Phonaks do not use any of the hearing aid features baked in the iOS. Instead iPhone sees the aids as a regular Bluetooth device and all the management has to be done from the Phonak app (it cannot use the iOS hearing aid built in features).
So Phonak is like any non Apple Bluetooth headset (not exactly like the AirPods because these do have functions baked in IOS).

Thanks for explaining. how would you say the sound uality for things like music is for the phonak’s streaming to the Iphname? Also, besides program settings what else does the phonak app allow you to control? Should I ask my audi to enable certain features to maxium control? I plan to get my new sphere in say 5 to 8 weeks. Thanks for your help, you guys are great.

In my opinion , Phonaks (and the Signia BCT) have the best streaming of all aids when used with the iPhone. This is because classic Bluetooth has more bandwidth than the Bluetooth LE that other aids use with the iPhone . This of course depends on the type of domes /molds used .
There is a new standard called Bluetooth , which is the next gen after Bluetooth LE ( the naming they are using is terrible ) but this is not available with Apple products .
I think you can download the Phonak app and use it in demo mode (I’m not sure about this, you can try ) . Or you can watch a demo video of the Phonak app that shows all the bells and whistles of the app.
Let us know how it goes when you get your new toys

Set all app notifications to silent or off, then only turn on what you actually want. Any new apps on my phone has their notifications disabled or silenced straight away.

Do I always have them connected to the app or will that drain the battery at a dramatic rate? I assume that if I disconnected from the app bluetooth streaming will not work?

The bluetooth LE connections to the app are independent of the Bluetooth classic streaming connection.
You can set in the app if you want to keep the LE connection alive for faster reconnects in the app. I do not noticed any effect on berry life of my .
Enabling Find my device in the app drains my iPhone battery in halve a day, so I keep that turned off.
