How to keep the Phonak I90 from falling out

Had new provided Phonak I90-R for two days before the right one, without realizing, fell/knocked out and was run over by a car. What can I do to keep them in? This is ridiculous, must be happening to others whether Phonak or not. VA is of no help. Is there some kind of ‘sports lock’ available for in the canal aids? (in the canal)

Wearing custom earmoulds works for me. Even if the aid gets knocked off of my ear by my hat or sunglasses, the mould stays in my ear. Then when I feel the aid dangling, I reach up and put it back where it belongs.

Hi. I believe the Phonak I90 R are (Receiver In Canal) hearing aids. I use the Lumity versions & use a retention lock/tail (i think they’re also called ‘sports lock’) to hold them in place. I had specifically requested my audiologist for them. Try asking your audiologist for the retention locks. Also, depending on your location, they may be available online too. There are a few youtube videos showing how to attach them correctly. Hope this helps.

A canal lock (also known as a retention wing, tail, or shoe) is an extension of the custom shell that rests in the concha bowl or against the anti-tragus of your ear. It prevents the hearing aid from wiggling out or migrating due to jaw movements like chewing or talking.

Hello, My audiologist supplied that type of lock for my Spheres and they do work very well. Unfortunatley the one in my right ear creates a pressure point so I only wear one in my left. I’ve never had the left one fall out.

Hi It may not be a pressure point but rather that the lock has a rough or sharp edge to it. Ask you Audi to put another one on there and see if that helps.

I can relate to those tiny little dickens hearing aids sneaking out of your ears. In 21 years, had that happen 3 times. The 3rd time, it was on a day that our area was getting 80-100 mph winds and I was in and out of the car going from one medical testing series to another. At my Costco fitter’s advice, I bought a pair of custom fitted ear molds that snugs those little weasels in more securely. Your V A medical center audiologist can, and should be automatically ordering custom ear molds for veterans with new hearing aids. I’m a retired V A senior RN. Even though I retired years ago, I’ll never stop advocating for veterans medical needs.

Hi, the hearing aids don’t have positive anchoring. The receiver (or some call it the speaker unit) is the only soft anchoring system. Here are a few tips: a. Make sure the receiver wire is not too short, otherwise the receiver keeps coming out of the ear canal as soon as you talk or chew food. b. make sure that the dome you are using is the right sise, if it is too small or too large again the receiver wont stay in the ear canal firmly. Try Phonak eartip or cshell for optimum retention, especially if your lifestyle is active e.g running, action, etc. The eartip/cshell requires your audiologist to take impressions from your ear canals and order them for you (at a higher cost of course). I also got new Phonak Infinio Spheres this year, and had an issue with one acrylic custom mold falling out almost every hour. I asked my audi if the surface could be made less slick. And the answer was YES. A new acrylic mold was made with a slightly “textured” surface, and now it never falls out!

I don’t believe this has anything to do with the hearing aids brand. I had the same issue when I started wearing Oticon hearing aids over 20 years ago. The same happened when I got a pair of Phonak at Costco, and the latest Oticon miniRITE S1. I would get the typical domes provided with the hearing aids, experimenting with the different sizes, all of which slipped out easily when moving the head, sometimes even bending down. Because both my ear canals are curved, the only solution was to have custom earmolds made, which solved the problem. I might add that over time as one ages, the ear canal shape might change and the custom molds start slipping out, which was my case, and I had to get new ear molds made.
