Hurting Ears

I talked about this wound in the left ear before. It’s back after I changed the tubes a couple of days ago. This time, even the right hearing aid hurt a bit.

I found out that every time I change the tubes, hearing aids don’t feel comfortable around my ears. I feel like I’m doing something wrong, but I have no idea what it is.

Do you have any idea what could be wrong? Or is it just the heat and sweating that make it worse? (These days, I’m in Luxor, and temperatures are above 40)

Perhaps you’re cutting the tubes too short so they pull on the moulds?

Next time, try cutting them a little longer, say 5mm, and see how that feels and whether the hearing aids still sit properly over the ears. If necessary cut off a little bit of tubing from the top (as little as possible, say 1mm) until it works.

It seems more likely though that your moulds don’t fit so well and are putting pressure on your skin, but that doesn’t explain why it only hurts with new tubing (new tubing is flexible, then it gets harder with time and exposure to UV, so it would make more sense to me if your ears hurt more with older tubing).

You could also try with domes for a while to see if your ears still hurt. The domes won’t suit your level of hearing loss so but they’re cheap to buy and could be a way to see if the problem is the mould rather than the tubing.

I changed the tubes a couple of days ago, and my ears feel much better now. However, the aids don’t sit still behind the ear, probably now the tubes are taller!

My moulds are made of silicon. Is it recommended to change them every two years or so? Recently, I’ve heard short echoes coming from the left hearing aid sometimes but I can’t pinpoint the reason (my hair, my hijab, not fitting well inside the ear, another reason)

The hearing aids not sitting properly behind the ear suggests the tube is too long. Try cutting off just 1 mm from the tube and wearing it for an hour or so. If necessary continue shortening the tube by just 1 mm - small changes make big differences here!

It’s possible the short echoes are because the aid is pushing your hair (or even you hijab, depends on how tight you wear the hijab), If you didn’t have that before then it should improve once you find the right length for the tubes.

I’ve never used silicon moulds so don’t know much about them. But they’re usually considered non-allergenic and unlikely to irritate the skin, but theoretically could be causing the pain because the skin is reacting to the silicon. It’s a case of trying to see what helps I’m afraid.

I don’t hear the echoes as frequently as I used to. Probably, the current length is better.
