My Oticon Real right hearing aid is fully charged. After inserting into ear, the unit turns on (accompanied by the musical tone). However, after 5-10 seconds, it turns off. Then after 5-10 seconds, it comes on again (and you do hear the musical tone again alerting that the unit is on). Then, after a few seconds, it automatically turns off again… This sequence repeats itself continually. Any ideas on how to fix this would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

I had the same issue with my right Oticon Mini . Nothing I did solved the issue. Brought it to my supplier and they could not service and needed to send it to Oticon for repair. Came back two weeks later and never really got an explanation of what caused the issue – Maybe moisture? When they returned the aid, the audiologist said it was essentially a new piece. Fortunately, still under warrantee.
However, some strange things happening lately, with programs being out of sync, from time to time. And today, I am noticing what sounds like intermittent scratchy squelch. If this keeps up or gets worse I will have to got back.
This is my 4th set of Oticon. Have never had an issue like this before.

You might try switching receivers and see if the problem moves to the other aid. If it does you have a bad receiver.

Thank you very much for your note, Rick. Unfortunately, my warranty expired a little over two months ago. They told me that the repair would be $350 for one and $700 for both. Both were having some problems back in March, so I sent them in for warranty repair at that time. When I received the repaired units in mid-April, they seemed to work fine - except shortly thereafter, I began having the issue in my left one that I think is similar to the one you are having now. I have been getting an intermittent shushing, white noise that sounds like what you may be having. I worked with an audiologist, and we swapped out the receiver just to see if that would help. Unfortunately, it did not. Then a few days later, the right one began its more significant problem of turning off and on. I thank you again for your note and hope that scratchy squelch sound is resolved for you soon! Regards, Jim

Thank you very much for your suggestion. Was an excellent troubleshooting thought that I had not even considered. However, unfortunately, the issue stayed with the unit rather than the receiver. Thanks for taking your time and concern as we try to avoid that $350 repair bill! Regards, Jim

Ok. Next step. Do you use a dryer? Any moisture and electronics is bad. If you don’t have a dryer descant is cheap or putting the aids in a bag of rice for a couple or three days just might get you going again. Usually your fitter/audiologist will have a nice dryer. Asking them to run your aids in a dryer is another option.

Hi Jim,
After reading your note, what came to mind are the similarities in the issue we have been having. If this were a forum about automobiles, given the number of users and watchdogs out there….similar manufacturer issues and deficiencies of particular makes, brands and years, get identified as product deficiency and are subject to recalls and/or out out of warrantee fixes.
Of course, this forum does does not have the advantage of massive numbers of complainants and independent consumer advocates, but, I have to think that you and I are not the only ones with these specific kinds of issues. Not that we can ever prove that however.
My sense is that Oticon has knowledge of these products deficiencies, beyond our cases, and has probably dealt with them fairly frequently.
Oticon hearing aids are expensive. Users should not have to pay to repair for defective products.

Do your Real 1 aids have rechargeable batteries? If so, has anyone checked (or replaced) the battery? A battery change can be done at your provider’s office in a few minutes (my provider has replacement batteries on hand).
I have Real 1 aids - one was randomly rebooting after about 15 months of use. I went in and the first thing the provider did was to replace the battery. She also replaced the battery in the working aid. The cost was covered under warranty. She also put in a newer version of firmware. I haven’t had a reboot since (over 15 months). I can’t say for sure, but I strongly suspect that the reboots were caused by a failing battery. Another possibility was bug fixes, especially for connectivity, in the updated firmware.

Thanks very much for the information and input you provided about my hearing aid issues. Three months ago, my hearing aids - which, like yours, are Real 1 - were sent in to “Yes Hearing” (the company from whom I purchased the ‘s) for battery replacement and firmware upgrade. This was done per recommendations after a teleconference with an Audiologist from “Yes Hearing”. (I do not have a local provider - all is done online and remotely.) I agree with your suspicion of the reboots being caused by a battery issue. Within the past 3 months, my warranty has expired, so the charges mentioned in previous posts will be charged if I send them back in. After receiving your note, I am going to ask “Yes Hearing” to confirm that the batteries were replaced and firmware updated when the units were sent in in March. Thank you again for your input and helpfulness!!!

The batteries will carry a warranty extension on them if they went back to Oticon. Might be different in your locale, but Oticon post warranty repairs and battery swaps for 6/12months.

I had a somewhat similar problem with a Phonak P. The left aid was intermittant especially when wearing glasses. I checked the receiver connection and saw corrosion on the connector. I solved the problem by cleaning and putting electrically conductive grease on the connector (female side).

Is there some reason this is not used by audiologists? Perhaps there is not a skin safe formula?

Perhaps if careful and using a very small amount but not every audiologist is so delicate and they have to worry about liability. I looked up Super Lube as it is considered food equipment safe. I wonder whether a manufacturer would try to void the warranty over grease. Possibly if the shell or something failed in the receiver socket area.
