I mean, I think there's a good reason to limit latest to some recent time window. What do you guys think is reasonable? Or I could maybe let people change the setting with some default like 3 months. Really the target window should be the longest you might go without visiting again so you can catch up on everything you missed since the last visit.

Other forums that use the same software have behavior as I mentioned. I find that my eye overlooks the dimmed out title - If it was bright/bold I am more likely to not overlook it - since I am interested in that thread. Bright/bold means more important to me. Dim means I can ignore if I wish since there is no new information. It is far quicker to notice because you are already starting to read the words rather than trying to determine if there is a little blue circle/number somewhere.

The top one - "Latest"

Except that instead of "Stays, but dims" it would be "Stays, but dims until there is a new reply and then turns bright"

I'm sharing all of this to give the bigger picture. What I'm hoping to do is create some kind of consistent user experience. Dims is present on top latest, and following currently... and wondering if it makes sense to have it work one way in one place and another in another..

Yes "Following" should be the same whatever you decide. I rarely use Following though...

Small here is larger and more spaced than normal elsewhere. Compare a fixed number of lines in a paragraph and it becomes more measurable even on the small screens. This is just one example but it is objectively different default size to default size at least on iOS.

@AbramBaileyAuD : The end and home keys and then back button work as I expect now. Interestingly, when I press end I get to the end of the page but the number doodad of the count of posts does not move. If I click the bottom of the bar or latest reply then it moves down.

Oh, this might be behavior when not logged in. Let me check. Yes, when not logged in.

I haven't played with the latest tab on this forum, but from the name I would assume that it's listing posts in sequence.... with the most recent post at the top. That's close to the way I view every forum that I participate in, but not quite.

it's a sequential list of threads... the trhead with the most recent post would be on top usually. When I see a thread I'd like to look at and click on it, it jumps to the first post in that thread that happened after I clicked "mark all as read". I can scroll through all the posts in the trhead that I haven't yet seen, or even go back to earlier posts to reread, then I go back out to the "unread posts" list and look at any others that I'm interested in. Then when I've looked through everything, and I'm satisfied that I'm not interested in any of the others, then I can mark everything as read....and that resets the search to show only things posted after that....so I mark everything as read just before logging out.

The result is the next time I log in I can see a clear and clean list of all new threads + any old threads that have new posts since my last login. It works better than resetting based on my last login, because sometimes I'm only able to get part way through the list and will need to come back later to finish it.

What I asked you is difficult to answer. I have been on forums where posts get moved to archive after a length of time has elapsed but are able to show up in a search as the topic may still be beneficial to someone.

My thinking is to limit the latest button return topics dated maybe 5 years from today's date of clicking the latest button. Granted, some of the old post could contain useful information to someone and should stay. Query your forum moderators for their thoughts and ideas as well.

Some of my thoughts on this...

Old links, software versions, or instructions often no longer work and out of date with technology.

The original poster may have likely solved their problem or moved on.

I would look at the date of the last reply before posting.

Create a new post if your question or your situation is slightly different from the old post.

We appreciate all the work you have put into the new forum!

I agree that it's a bit much, but given the lists contain different posts, it would not be as simple as just resorting, I would also need to add some filters for people to include just posts they are following, etc. I guess the existing lists could be thought of as presets for common goals in terms of sorts and filters.. It would be cool to understand which ones people actually care about vs don't so I could simplify.

Ooh, could we get a count next to the new button of new topics yet to be viewed?

This is exactly how it works here.

Still noodling on how to handle the other ideas!
