Rexton Reach Failures

I've had them for over a year. I like them but the microphone input circuitry on the left aid has stopped working three times and it had to be sent in for repairs/replacement. It's always the left one. Streaming continues to be okay

There is a clicking/popping sound that progresses to continuous static for a while and then silence. Sometimes it may work okay again for a day or two before it goes out.

I keep them clean and water/sweat is not an issue.

My local Costco has not heard of anyone else with this problem.

I too have had my left Pro 10 mini mic fail now 4 th time they are being rebuilt. Each time the left got muddy and hard to follow music or conversation if any other sound is there. Audiologist muted left and there was no difference. Gave me a pair of Pro 10 and I now can hear better for the first time in years. They don’t want to sell me the pro 30 since mine are just 3 years old. Say the rebuild ones should work just like these loaners. I’m not convinced

I do not use a dryer. I have used a baggie with desiccant packs in it for my KS9 backups. The battery door design is so bad that you only have to think about a drop of water.:slight_smile:

The Rexton’s are supposed to be water resistance, so would a dryer help?

I still have 2 1/2 years of warranty left, and I was planning on using them for my backups, but based on the reliability so far, I don’t know if I could count on them.

Do folks normally use dryers with water resistant aids?

My wife wears KS9 aids. She gets out and sweats doing yard work often. She started getting a ticking sound in one of them about a month ago. She has never used a dryer. When she told me about this I pulled a Zepher dryer out that I had and she has started using it every night. The ticking issue has gone away.

I personally wore Phonaks, used a dryer daily and never had issues and sweat a bunch and often. All hearing aids are moisture resistant, it's not about the battery doors, it's about electrical coatings inside.

Anything electrical and expensive should be taken care of from moisture.

The Reachs are IP68 rated, meaning they are built and certified to endure immersion in water for 30 minutes at a depth of one meter.

Newer differ from older models with replaceable batteries, which were less resistant because of the battery door and other components. If humidity alone were the cause, the issue would likely not appear only on one side.

I would ask Costco whether the unit is being repaired or replaced. They can determine this by checking the serial numbers. Perhaps this is one of those instances where the manufacturer cannot identify the root cause for a proper fix . Maybe you can ask for a replacement unit instead of a repaired unit .

I do have a dryer but was told not to use it with the rechargeable 10 as is could harm it.

The past rebuild only said internal replacement parts with no details. Costco asked for total replacement this time.

The loaner pair with my current setting is clear and hear in noise working properly.

I was referring to the design of the KS9 doors. In the past I would have to pull the batteries out and wipe the moisture off and they would work just fine. Mainly an annoyance. I finally learned not to wear them if there was even a slight change of sweating.

Agreed, the newer aids do have a better rating these days.

Those older Phonaks with disposable batteries I used must have been a step better than most aids of that time, maybe even the new aids. I never had issues with them. Bought a bunch of used aids off eBay over the years.

I still believe in taking care of of hearing aids. Correct dryers are not an issue with aids. They are a great preventative maintenance device for long term ownership. The sad thing is the rechargeable aids now are pretty much disposable too forcing people to buy new ones.

Moisture enters the aids through your ear piece/molds. And indeed both of these need to be dried out overnight. At least, that's what my providers all tell me. And it makes sense.

I have rechargable aids. It's true that these require a low heat, longer drying time dryer.. There are plenty of these available that treat rechargeable in a safe manner. Dessicant in a bag? Maybe. My providers all give out little plastic jars with dessicants inside that work well. I think they might give a better seal.

I use the Phonak perfect dry with my rechargeable aids but make sure to get latest as earlier ones were to hot for rechargeable aids.

For those of you that have rechargeables and use a dryer, how long do you typically leave them in the dryer?

I currently leave mine in the recharging case when I’m not wearing them and have never had a problem with the batteries running down even when doing a lot of streaming. Thanks.

The Phonak perfect dry ( latest model) will only run for 45 minutes & up to 35 degrees so no point in leaving them in any longer, I used to put my Lumity’s in while having a shower once a week depending upon ambient humidity now will do the same with my EON’s.

I use the Dry-Cap UV2 Electronic Hearing Aid Dryer for Rechargeable Hearing Aid. I place the aids in the charger with the ear speaker and dome outside the charger then the charger under the drier dome. This has worked for me for over a year.

I believe that's the same dryer I use for my rechargeable aids. And yes, after several years of use, both the dryer and the aids are still going strong. My audi congratulated me for using a dryer. Some mornings I find ear wax crusted on the outside of my aids, and sometimes in the sound holes of my aids. Dried wax is easy to remove. and it proves the dryer is working. (I live in a humid climate.)

Well this morning, my right aid was dead right out of the charger. It worked properly when I put it in the charger last night.

The switch allows program selection. I’ll take it to Costco to see if the wire or speaker is bad and if not have them to send it in for replacement.

Since it’s past the exchange period, is there any other option? At this point I like the Reach but would not purchase Rexton again since they have been unreliable.
