Phonak Paradise 90R - music artifacts removal - and settings recommendations

Hi - I am using Phonak Paradise 90 Has. I am a musician (mainly acoustic guitar during lockdown). I get an annoying artificial chirp or warble at certain frequencies - notable at 300Hz and 440Hz and on multiples to a lesser extent). It happens using Autosense and also the default Music program, I have tried different settings in the Phonak app to no avail. I suspect there is a deeper setting that the Genie software can set. I am seeing my audi next week and I would like to make any informed suggestions to her that this forum might offer.

Secondly, to all the musicians or audiologists with music experience out there - are there any suggestions for settings to optimize music listening and performing - particularly for acoustic guitar at the moment - but also for electric guitar in a band setting whenever lockdown allows us to play together again! I appreciate everyone’s hearing is different - but ballpark suggestions that my audi and I can start with would be great!

FYI - I previously had Oticon OPN 1 until the end of Jan. I have been trialling Oticon More 2 and then Oticon More 1 - but have just settled on the Phonak Paradise 90s (for better or worse - lol). The More’s had different sounding artifacts at around 800-900Hz.

Have Audie make a manual program for music. I found relying on Autosense for music didn’t always stay on, because if a person starts talking and other “sounds” happen Autosense changes programs accordingly. Music program in Autosense as such would be more for listening to music in general not for “playing music”.

I agree. Manual music program is a lot better.

I use AutoSense which has music within it. According to DataLogging, my AutoSense has never actually gone into the music setting even tho I’ve been listening to music (not by Bluetooth) so it doesn’t seem to work as well.

I were the Phonak marvel 90, but I did have the same problem with playing my guitar. I took my guitar with me when I went to see my audi and we worked out the bugs that way. You might ask if you audi if you could do the same.

I would take into account where you sit when you are playing. If you sit close to a wall the chirping sound may be that autosense is having trouble with feedback issues and not transferring the music faithfully to your ears. I find my M90s are very sensitive to feedback relative to where I happen to be in a room with hard surfaces. When I shift a few feet the chirping sound disappears. I think I will take up the suggestions. Mentioned here of getting the audiologist to install the dedicated music program.

I sometimes use the app to make small changes like a little more bass and increase the softer settings and gives me good results but if the IPad gets an email, etc the temp switch to IPad and then goes back to Autosense bah!.. But not to worry App version 5 soon to be released addresses these issues. But locking into manual on HA is the current preferred method of playing live.

I realise this is an old post. Did you ever get a satifactory resolution? Acoustic guitar is very prone to warble/tremolo/shimmer due to Phonak’s whistleblock algorithm. Sounds awful. And the manual program without it feeds back excessively. I’m going through a similar process/dilemma, hope you found a solution.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I already have a music program without whistleblock, and it is this “manual” music program which feeds back excessively. (My other prgrams do have whistleblock.)

Since writing my post I have found that increasing the Noise Reduction setting in my "manual’’ Music program via the Myphonak App can help reduce the onset of feedback, which tends to start when the ’s are not receiving much sound (when it’s quiet, in between playing guitar for example). Hope this helps someone.

Are you close to the limit of the hearing aids / receivers?

What domes / ear moulds are you having?

I don’t have my data, but I believe I have only moderate hearing loss .I will ask my audiologist for that. I have tried various closed/vented domes and power domes. With the latter I get too much occlusion, but of course less feedback.
Some weeks on from my original query, I think I am near a solution with just some fine tuning of my manual program to do.

If you have a moderate loss in the lows then that’ll be the reason you’re getting feedback especially if you’re using open domes.

I have this problem with my new Phonaks (I90 Spheres). I pluck a high guitar note and get an echoing, sinusoidal warble, which tapers off. Audiologist tried to fix the music program not a help.

Has anyone with ACTUAL experience with this been able to fix it?

I sent a message to Phonak through the app. Got their boiler plate instructions on reconnecting the hearing aids to my phone.

Guitarist with I90 Spheres here. I found the linked checklist of strategies to be very helpful for guiding my audiologist. I have a relatively open fitting so the results are less than perfect, but turning off some of the feedback and wind processing and taming the compression has improved my experience MAKING music with my aids with a new setting just for that.

Switching to Phonak I90 Spheres has been challenging. Luckily my audiologist is around the corner. Unluckily, the main one I see there seems to be getting tired of me.

Interesting! I’ve had Phonak Pardise P90R’s for 3-1/2 years. I’m not a musician. In fact I need to practice with my dust covered ukulele. Way back I went to lots of schools. Music teacher in Grade 2 listened carefully and said I was tone deaf. I was in my 3rd school and had travelled across Canada already.
I feel I have a huge mental block.

I discovered the MUSIC program last winter. I saved a copy of the program. That’s the one I use now. Think I’ll get my Kala out.

I’m very very interested in Self Fitting and Adjusting. I need to get the noahlink…
