Phonak Paradise hearing aids have died 2X

I got the Phonak Paradise P90R hearing aids earlier this year, after over 10 years with Oticon. I really like these aids, but - in December, my left aid suddenly died. You could hear a light crackle when you rubbed it, but neither nor the app recognized it, and when you put it in the charger no light came on. The right aid continued working. I took it in to my Audi who sent it to Phonak. It came back in 2 weeks and I was told most of the insides had been replaced (no explanation of the cause). Just as the left h.a. came back, the right aid did the same thing! So it was sent in and I had no right h.a. over Christmas holidays with parties and family! And BT and the app didn’t work because the right aid controls that - only having the left aid was not a good experience! Now its January and the left aid just died again. I’m waiting to see if the right aid dies too like last time. Anyone else have this problem? Know what could be causing it? My husband thinks its the charger, but my Audi denies that.

I’m a little surprised that the audi didn’t supply you with some kind of a loaner aid while yours were in for repairs. I’ve had my paradise now about 8 months and have had no problems at all. For whatever that’s worth. Do you store them in a dehumifier?

I was given a loaner after I realized how little the left h.a. could do. But the loaner aids were not P90, they were lower level aids and boy, could I tell a difference! Also, I forgot to ask to have the loaner aids set up (recievers) to work with my Roger On, and by that time the office was closed for a week for the Winter Holiday.

I do not use a dehumidifier as my audi said I shouldn’t need one. But good point - I’ll get the dehumidifier insert for the Phonak charger to use.

I have the P90 here right now for testing and can also adjust it myself.
I think your audio has done a bad job.
You can set whether the left or the right device is connected with bluetooth. Also, your audiologist has loan devices that he can set to P90 Nivieau. The rental devices can simulate all levels.
And yes, I also had problems in the test phase that the devices sometimes fail. This happens when they are stored in the charging cradle without connection to the power supply. Then the batteries are apparently so deeply discharged that nothing works anymore. No LED, no button, nothing. Only when the power supply is connected for some time then the batteries recover. I do not like this behavior. This could be done better.

Thanks, I’ll remember to avoid using the charger to store when not plugged in. I haven’t done that, so didn’t know it could cause a problem.

Aren’t these things explained in the owners manual. Boy switching out batteries seems so less stressful.

You didn’t say if you’re using the aids outdoors in humid conditions or at office. An hearing aid dryer is needed to remove moisture from your aids. l have a pair of P70-UP aids and have no issues. l never wear my aids outdoors when raining or on boat. Your audiologist should have provided loaner aids or you can buy used Phonak aids.
l brought a pair of Naida SP V90 on from a hearing aid seller online at reasonable price. l use these aids as backup and program all my aids myself.

I’m very interested in hearing more about what happens with your Paradise aids, because I am planning to trial them this week. I have been wearing Oticon Opns for about four years.

Is it possible for hearing aids to drain the battery even when they are turned off ?? Rechargeable hearing aids do not have a classic power switch, but the button must be held for 3 seconds longer to turn on the hearing aid. I have a hunch that because of that switch, the hearing aid has to maintain electricity, electricity of very lower power that can eventually be completely consumed if the hearing aids have been in the drawer for too long.
Lithium-ion batteries do not like complete discharge, for example a smartphone when it notices that the battery is running low, it will start automatic shutdown to save the remaining electricity. It is possible when the battery capacity is, for example, 5% that it is in fact 15 or 20% because it is a kind of protection that there is always little electricity left in the battery.

That is the very reason I opted for battery powered hearing aids.
There is a finite set number of recharges and potential for being at the least opportune time when the daily charge decides to quit with rechargeables.

I carry a set of spare batteries in my wallet so that I am never longer than 30 seconds without hearing.

I have had my Phonak Paradise P90Rs for almost a year now. No problems with them. I do live in a low humidity area. Even so, I do use the humidifier pod with my charger.

One of my P90’s died a couple of months after I got them. I was trying to save a custom config. and right after that, the left one powered down and would not power back on. I put it in the charger but no light on the aid. I took it back to the audi and they were both sent back to Phonak. They did replace the with a new pair and so far, so good. It was definitely a hardware failure.

A humid evironment is something hearing aids are subjected to everyday whenever you’re wearing them. If you live in Phoenix or Saudi Arabia you’re ears are still subjected to high moisture from your ears. And I’m not talking about sweating.

Anywhere that you cannot replace batteries {I have not found any place yet} will be even less suitable to conduct a recharge. Rechargeable anything: , phones, razors, tooth brushes, have a finite number of charges. Then you must replace the item. $4000 hearing aids?
I can buy batteries.

Very common to get new batteries at the end of the 3 year warranty cycle on rechargables, so you get more than 6 years if you want.

@scotthwilliams3 Let’s give you an instance from my own experience: in the middle of a chamber music concert.
And another that comes to mind: as a panelist on stage during a panel discussion.
And another (perhaps not impossible, but awkward and embarrassing) at a formal dinner, during the after-dinner speeches (which went on longer than I’d anticipated while my batteries ran out sooner than anticipated).

To quote from hearphonak.com:
“Unlike silver zinc rechargeable batteries that need to be replaced every 10 to 12 months, the Phonak lithium-ion solution will last approximately the life time of the hearing aid, which is now six years.”
