Phonak Paradise to Oticon More 1

I’ve written about this in other posts on this blog. I haven’t read every one of the many comments on this one but most seem pretty spot on.
I had a single Marvel for ~5 years. I really loved it. I upgraded to a Paradis with their new and I didn’t love it. As the author of this blog post also noticed, the “crispy” sounds seemed to be muted. I guess my audiologist isn’t savvy enough because she did try to adjust things but I was missing too much of the little sounds that seemed to be muted. After researching I did learn that Phonak changed their software so it wasn’t my imagination. I probably would have kept that set anyway however the rechargeable battery wasn’t making it through a whole day and this was a true dealbreaker for me.
I decided to try Oticon’s More 1 with their new CROS. I knew more or less immediately after she turned them on that they would be keepers. All the little sounds were immediately back and everything sounded louder. My audiologist (who is not ) detests when her patients ask for things to be louder because loudness shouldn’t be the goal, however all I know is I want to hear little things like a printer printing out a document in the room next to me or something. Software developers shouldn’t decide that’s not important for me to hear and train the algos to only hear what should be human speech instead. I get the sympathy on their part but hearing is more than just hearing spoken words, it’s hearing everything that’s going on. In my opinion Oticon has really done an amazing job with the OPN platform and I’ve been a happy customer (again as I had one years ago) for almost 2 years now. Oh, and the battery makes it through all day with no problems. My battery has only gone out once after something like a 14 hour day filled with work calls (streaming), lots of other sound processing (driving around, talking to different people) and heavy TV streaming. Since that is less than .1% of my daily activities I face little to no risk of battery failure before I go to bed. Also, Oticon apparently has made it easy for audiologists to replace the rechargeable battery themselves so when my battery life does inevitably shorten to the point of it being a problem I’ll take them in for a quick replacement and problem solved. Oticon wins in every category for me.

I have the More1 aids and love them. I have been wearing aids for over 18 years and Oticon aids for over 12 years. I have tried Phonak, Siemens, and Resound and find that I like the Oticon sound the best. Resound would be my second choice. I want and believe I need what I call the surround sound that the More1 aids give me. The Phonak aids I tried seemed like I was wearing sound blinders, I couldn’t hear all around me, I live in a forest and walk the trails and need to hear all around me, there are wild animals and the sometimes falling trees.
I am very lucky to have an audiologist that has been willing to spend the time with me, on calls, and doing research to get my aids adjusted so well that I don’t need extra programs, I only have the PO default. It makes my life so much easier. All I need is the once in a while volume adjustment.

Just over a year ago I trialed the Oticon More 1s for a week and then did a trial on the Paradise P90-Rs and ended up choosing the Paradise.
Yes, the More 1s had a bit more natural sound and were slightly better on speech but I didn’t like the slight hiss that they emit. My audiologist said she had heard that complaint before.
Also, the way the Paradise works with my Android phone was way better for me than with the More 1s. Another thing was that the More 1s didn’t fit over my ear as well and weren’t as comfortable as the Paradise.

@texaco24.9: I have been wearing Oticon brand More1 hearing aids for almost two years. I have never experienced this complaint, nor has anyone I know who wears them.

This complaint has to do with the length of the receiver wires. The bodies of all are basically just blobs of plastic that sit there … but where they sit is dependent upon receiver wire length.
Are you sure your audiologist knows what she’s talking about? (Other More wearers will likely chime in …)

She said Oticon was her preferred brand and she had the most experience with. That’s all I know.
It did seem that it was the shape of the case that made them uncomfortable on my ear. I was coming from Resound Lynx 2 which were my first set of ’s.

@texaco24.9: Merry Christmas. Thanks for your reply. Understand that I’m not expert on the other brands of , but my More aids are strictly middle-of-the-road “blobs” - neither large nor small. I can’t say that I feel them behind my ears, at all.
That said … the length and shape of the receiver wire has a huge impact on comfort/where the aids sit.
And the hiss is called “floor noise”, I believe. I’m going to holler up @Volusiano to explain … but there are plenty of other Forum experts who could explain the phenomenon better than me.

It’s that sharper angle on the case that made them more uncomfortable to me. Both my old Resound and my P90s have more of a smooth crescent shape on them.

I have the More1 aids and never noticed even feeling the part behind my ears. Not even with my glasses being taken off and on. Now the face mask is a different story.

Indeed it’s quite rare to hear of a More user complaining about hearing a slight hiss, which is usually the floor noise that the user hears. That’s because usually the floor noise phenomena is only pronounced when the are set to beam forming mode. See this thread in the forum that discusses it in more details.
If indeed it is what you hear, then your audi just needs to take you off that Full Directional setting and you shouldn’t hear it anymore. But I realize that it’s already water under the bridge for @texaco24.9 since he went with the Phonak anyway. But his could have easily fixed this if it were communicated to the HCP and the HCP were a competent one to recognize exactly what the problem was and knew how to fix it.

@Volusiano: That’s what I thought, MrV, but I didn’t feel qualified enough to express that opinion myself.

It was the benefit I get with how the P90’s work with my Android phone that was the largest deciding factor. I like the fact that I can answer and talk on the phone while it remains in my pocket or even in an adjacent room. And the quality for both me and the person on the other end is superb while doing that.

MERRY CHRISTMAS to @Volusiano & @SpudGunner & everybody…
When the music is of good quality in TikTok or Youtube, the sound in MORE 1’s is very nice and soothing to the ears but when there is a lot of clapping or watching a basketball game on TV (with clapping), I can hear a distorted clapping with a swoosh sound. The more or louder the clapping, the more swoosh or hiss sound. Where the Audi should adjust or fine-tune? Appreciate your kind advice.

Merry Christmas @danka and to everyone else on the Forum who is celebrating!
I’m going to hand this one off to @Volusiano , if you will permit it …
