Thanks Louie - appreciate that info. So these are not tips like those that are standard with the aids but are more like the “old fashioned” (sorry, I don’t know how better to describe it) in-ear moulds?

Can I also ask - I’ve seen people talking about custom-sized vents in these. How do you know what works?

They are like older molds. The provider can choose what they think is the mose appropriate vent size or the molds can come with what is called select-a-vent. Those molds are made with a large vent but come with various pieces that can be inserted into that vent to reduce the vent size.

Just for another alternative, here are my titanium slimtips with activevent receivers. No vent hole as the receivers open or close depending on program.

Not sure whether to start a new thread with these questions or just post here, but they fit with the general theme of the original post, I think.

Got last night. Wasn’t impressed with the audiologist, who didn’t check the placement of the domes in my ears and it was only when I got home that I realised they weren’t in my ear canal fully. She says she has increased the volume (and I can hear this) but I still feel there’s not great clarity. Still, will wait a few days.

My questions:

  • I’ve got no feeling of occlusion at all with the new domes. Like, none. I was prepared for this, but now I’m worrying that no occlusion means they’re not fitting correctly. Is this normal? I’ve eaten/yawned/talked, and apart from my voice sounding slightly boomy, nothing else is strange.

  • Streamed music now sounds perfect, but I was hoping the closed domes would stop sound leaking. My husband tells me he can hear my music playing, even at the lowest volume. This makes me nervous that I’m irritating people in the office or when I’m walking. Is this sound leakage normal?

  • I’ve realised that I’m hearing a lot of adjustment. The “Wind noise” I’d experienced before is clearly a program shift. However, it’s happening constantly. Will I get used to this with time, or should this not be quite so obvious?

  • If you’re a provider, what should I now be looking for? Better clarity? How would I know whether the domes are working better beyond more loudness?

These questions sound really dumb when I’m writing them down, but as you can tell, my experience with my audiologist isn’t great. She’s really waiting to be led by me and I’ve no idea what I’m supposed to be experiencing!!

Your one of the lucky ones,as it’s common for people to notice it straight away. As for not fitting properly, one very easy way to check is feedback, the more closely they sit in your ears (they should fit deeply, not just in your ears) the less feedback.

Yes they always sound a bit better closed, but more Bass, as for your hubby hearing the streaming I’m thinking the domes aren’t fit deeply enough, push them in a bit more, no doubt he’s sitting right next to you to be able to hear on the lowest volume?

It’s one of the reasons I didn’t like Phonak, with Autosense I could hear the changes (which it didn’t get right a lot of the time)
Hard to say if you’ll accept it or not, over time maybe.

Why don’t you try the custom made molds,with the correct sized vent they could be a better solution, definitely a better fit.

I think the are about as hard to change between the wax guards for conventional receivers and activevents. I had to resort to needles multiple times with the conventional receivers. I have used a knife point to get them out on my activevents.
