Yes! Today 29th April I got my new Phonak Lumity Naida 90 UP . They are just ok, but I did not got new molds yet… perhaps soon, they posted them this afternoon! Something more adjustments and I am very optimist to these aids. Me and my husband made 500 km trip to get these aids. 6 o´clock in the morning we left our home and I drove our own car to audis office. Four hours later I praired aids and all sounds good. Back to home 4 o´clock afternoon. A little tired, but pleased. I got a Dry lux dryer on sale when I bought them. Do you use dryer? I have never used.
I was in a private office (quiet) and couldn’t hear. I had to move closer (to 4 feet from 6)
Then I went to the noisy cafeteria. Cup of Coffee. Sat down for a while. Got the APP going on my phone. It said I was in “Speech in Car” I COULD HEAR. Another check. The noisy talkers had gone. “Calm” but there was no conversation to listen to. Strange fan noise and some other stuff. Darned if it didn’t go to “Speech in Noise” The strange fan noise was what it was…still no conversation.
Darned if I know what to do. Wish I had analog hearing aids
Quick update on the Naida P30 UPs, from tonights quiz night. My old team were also playing pool against our pub’s other team, so I was briefly in that echoey environment.
When I arrived, I had the thin tubes and custom slimtips attached. Although this is a programming option in both Bolero M70, and Audeo P90, it ISN’T an option with the Naida P30, even though the connections are the same. Anyway, it was a bit strange as I could hear everyone quite well, but there was some strange distortion to the sound. I went into the App and reduced mids and highs, and that lessened it, a bit. I then tried the RogerOn, which helped, but not a lot. So, I switched the thin tubes/slimtip combo for the anchors/thick tubes/earmoulds. Wow!! I’m nearly there! Like @kevels55 said from his testing weekend, my speech recognition increased by a high percentage. I then switched a hearing aid for the P90 , and for the first time, the balace was in favour of the Naidas. I switched them, same again.
Conclusions.
Do a separate hearing test for each hearing aid (Audio Direct). If the hearing aid is the trusted measuring tool, it will be different, if you use a different hearing aid. Thinking logically, this is pretty obvious.
The Naida P30 is a great (especially for me) but it’s set up for anchors and full earmoulds. It was a nice try to get away with thin tubes and slimtips, but it just didn’t work.
I didn’t suffer occlusion with the earmoulds, although I did with previous M70s.
We didn’t win the quiz, but I won the raffle… happy days
Tomorrow, the M70’s with the redundant thin tubes and slimtips, will get their own hearing test, and will hopefully improve their performance.
They’ll all be in one of my test environments tomorrow… the pub.
It has been over a week since I switched over to and I think this has been the right decision. I wanted to go with 2.0, but there were two problems I found with it, despite the upside of what I think was more immediate gain. The first problem was that when in close proximity to people, especially my wife, their voices came through too powerfully. The second problem was that they sounded too loud in noisy situations. This may have been adjustable, but it was beyond my skill set. I could not strike the balance of what I perceived to be the right default volume for hearing in general and when Autosense was transitioning to the noise program or as I say, when people were in close proximity.
So, over to NAL-NL2. I have had a mixed bag of experiences. On the whole it’s not the case of the good, the bad and the ugly. It was more the good, and the slightly disappointing. To start with the good first, with some new observations and general experience, I can say that the soft noise pick up of these aids is outstanding. I can actually hear myself and my wife whisper, but the overall perception is that the aids are not loud and the soft noise does not impact otherwise on general comprehension. The way I have them programmed, from last week adjustments, is that environmental sounds, such as birds outside, traffic noises, noises within the household, are easily perceived, and again, not overwhelming. I can hear voices through walls more, pipes, the tap running - again, all at a comfortable level.
In terms of the bête noire, listening to the radio and music in the car, this is a much better experience. The car in my experience is a bit of a nightmare with the Phonak. In Automatic mode, if one is driving, one cannot tell what mode it is in. I think historically, it goes to comfort in noise, which is a problem as the volume goes down slightly - and hence the enjoyment of music, so one would be turning the volume up on the radio. When the car comes to a stop, in the case of my mazda, the engine just stops, in i-stop mode, it is quiet, and the devices go into music mode. This is OK, but some volume adjustments are then required. Of course, your priority in the car may be talking to people, and in this situation the devices stay in comfort in noise or speech in noise, but even then, historically, with my previous discovery that the gain in the mids were too low, this did not result in a satisfactory experience as I would need to be altering the volume upwards all the time to try and understand someone.
From what I can gather now, and I am hoping this is not wishful thinking, the experience in the car is much improved. I am hearing my daughter’s better - I take them on numerous school runs. This is without constant volume adjustments. The optimal setting seems to be put the volume on 2. I don’t need to be in speech in noise now. With respect to the music and comprehension of the radio, my drive to Cambridge was pleasurable. I could hear clearly at motorway speed and turned the radio down a little going into the city centre, with much slower traffic.
OK. That was the good. In the case of the slightly bad, the French class was slightly better, but I still had had trouble understanding my French teacher at distance, within the confines of the classroom acoustics. Solution - whip out that secret weapon from it’s holster - the Roger On iN. This was a live saver. I managed to then understand over 80% of all the instructions and dialogue and could perceive around 50% of the French from the table behind, even though last week my perception there was about 10%. I think it’s the case that I am going to struggle with women’s voices in rooms with poor acoustics. I had the experience at the tennis club when I went in on Saturday. I talked to the coach and struggled big time with her voice. I spent the following day looking at fitting formulas - maybe Adaptive Phonak Digital Contrast, for slow compression? I think I am resolved to let this be, but may make some adjustments in Target - there are Automatic fine adjustments for women’s voices that are unintelligible. On a more positive note, the NAL-NL2 were better in noise in the French class, when I had to speak to my class partner I switched off Roger and I was able to make him out better whilst everyone else was talking.
Sounds really good @glucas . Our brains are strange things, as my perception, while briefly trying , was that the differences between APD2 and NAL-NL2 were the opposite of yours. This could be due to my bad programming though
Thanks PeterH. The problems with 2.0 could well have been down to the fit - not having reapplied on the aids, followed by some adjustments that maybe distorted the overall fit. Once I get a few days spare I will do a reset and try again.
@glucas
I just did Direct on all 3 sets and they were all quite different. The original was done on P90 . Luckily, that had the leadt changes, thankfully. All good fun.
Thanks! I know. Peel Audiology forgot about 4 years ago with the last Phonaks I had. I said did you change Target? She said no, next time. That was 6 months later.
I’ve found the sweet spot. 2 large power domes. That’s how Target is set up. No feedback. Best volume. When left one starts to itc I change my galldarn tiny and both Power
Domes
I have an appointment with Hearing Well Matters in 3 days. About a week ago I was caught saying “Eh? What?” Again. Sent to the doghouse because I couldn’t hear. Surely that’s age discrimination That’s when I changed back to the right power domes
Two noise situations encountered at the weekend. Went to a garden centre, Dobbies (Kev - you should be familiar with this chain, as there is one in Inverness, which I stopped at on my Scotland bike tour). It was early morning and not that many people were there. My brother and his wife are early risers, so coffees all around. What has sometimes been a problem in the past, hearing people at a cash register, was a breeze. We sat down and I had no problem understanding conversation the whole 2 hours I was there, even when the place began to fill out a bit. Did not have to make any adjustments. Not a big test of the capabilities of the Nadia Lumity SP to be fair.
Next up, my daughter’s 18th birthday at Bella Italia. This was more of a challenge. Horrible metallic adornments on the walls, high ceilings, an open kitchen with sizzling noises emanating and more surrounding tables with people. I cannot honestly say this was a breeze. I could hear my wife OK, but the voice of my daughter sitting next to me was more difficult and was lost at times. I played around with the settings on the app, such as Noise Reduction and Speech Focus and they didn’t solve things totally. It was only when I whipped out that secret weapon, the Roger On iN that my daughter’s voice came through in total crystal clear clarity and I could hear her and my wife, without any background noise at all (to be fair this was a semi noisy environment for the most part - the settings on the App went to speech in noise and speech in loud noise intermittently.). I heard the waiter without any problem and there was music but in speech in noise it was not heard.
Another observation - the speech in car mode was superb. I could hear my daughter and wife pretty clearly in the front, even at speed.
The only test I think yet to come is with multiple talkers in a really loud bar/pub/restaurant.
Yeah @glucas, I don’t recall ever being in Dobbies TBH… The Naida’s seem to be doing well in most situations, but not all… If we think about it logically, if the noise levels are way up, we will struggle, especially in hostile listening environments, hard floors, hard furnishings, high ceilings, and poor ambient lighting… We will be pushing the limits of the aids, but Roger On served you well I am in agreement with the hearing in the car, it’s much better than Paradise Naida’s… Cheers Kev
@markoo355
Firstly I tried using thin tubes and custom slimtips in the Naidas. They seemed fine in the house, but when I went to the pub, the overall sound was strangely distorted (SoundRecover2 was disabled). While there, I switched them out for the standard Anchors (removed the filter thing Kev ), full vented moulds with thick tubes. As Kev says, filters aren’t used. I do use Cerastops on the slimptips for the P90s though.
