Oticon Genie 2 Automatic Adaptation Manager settings

I am using the Genie 2 software for settings of my Oticon Intent 1 . I am confused about the three Steps associated with the Automatic Adaptation Manager (AAM) under More Tools. It is clear that I can separately Fine-tune the Gain Controls of the P1 program for each of the three Steps. But…

  1. If the AAM is NOT enabled, which of the three Steps are activated when the session is saved in the connected HAs?

  2. Am I correct in believing that changes in any Step seem to automatically cause somewhat corresponding changes in the other two Steps regardless of which Step is being changed?

  3. Only the P1 program seems to allow separately setting the Fine-tuning Gain Controls for all three Steps. All others programs do not have Step options for the Gain Controls on the Fine-tuning screen. Will these other programs not auto-adjust? And if they do, when I adjust the one set of Gain Controls on their Fine-tuning screen which Step of this program am I adjusting?

What am I not understanding about the AAM?

Your over thinking it all, most don’t even bother with it, it’s at 100% gain unless you activate it.
as for question 2 I don’t understand what your asking, let’s say you start at 80% (or whatever step) and then you can have that go to 100% over the next month or whatever.
For question 3, the auto adaption should be for all programs not just one, let’s see if the @flashb1024 can help you with all this, as it should be all pretty easy to follow in the genie user guides.

Well, as a new user of I wish to “bother” with it. And my question 1 still is: “100% gain” of which Step setting? The Gain Controls of each of the three Steps can be set separately. However the program defaults to setting Step 1, so a newbie like me could make the “assumption” that these are the (only) values used, and are what are activated in the HAs. Yet the program automatically creates Step 2 and Step 3 values. Now if the AAM is then enabled the values for Step 3 (NOT Step 1) are considered the 100% target values to get to over time. So if the Step 3 values are considered the target, are these (magically generated) values the ones used if the AAM is not enabled, which by default it is not.

Very not clear to me.

And I have read the genie user guides but can find little on the AAM which explains this.

Yes sure I get it, if you wanna do this. So right now I don’t have my laptop with me to check exactly what you mean, so I won’t comment more in case I confuse the situation more, but don’t worry some one will be along soon to explain, cheers

These are not magic, per Genie2 help:
Genie 2 automatically selects an adaptation step based on age, hearing loss and instrument experience level (selected in the Personalization tool). Step 1 corresponds to “None”.

The actual Target gain in step 3 is based on 100% of your not “Hocus Pocus”

Yes, all additional programs automatically follow P1’s setting:
The setting of the adaptation step influences all programs in the instrument.

Thank you very much, flashb1024, I think I am “starting” to understand. Following your comments I did some further testing and observe that any manual gain change to P1 in Fine Tuning to Step 1 also affects Step 3 and vice versa. I also now observe that any manual gain change in Fine Tuning to either Step 1 or Step 3 also affects all other programs. So it is clear that P1 controls all programs.

But I still don’t clearly understand the AAM. Sorry if I was a bit flippant about “magically generated”. I did realize that the difference between Step 1 and Step 3 was an automatic computation based on other values entered in the program, just that it was a bit “magic” to me how their difference was calculated.

I did read the comment from the Help you quoted. If you are willing to bear with me a bit more, I do still have some questions about HOW the steps are computed, and especially if this can be manually adjusted.

  1. If Step 3 is the “actual Target gain based on 100% of your ”, the first of my original questions remains: If the AAM is NOT enabled is Step 1 or Step 3 saved in the connected ?

  2. Can one manually make a change to Step 1 and not change Step 3, or is this not possible? As I do understand that Step 3 should be based on 100% of my audiogram I would assume I would not want to change those values. But changing Step 1 does change Step 3. So how can I manually make my starting point (Step 1) different (e.g. less gain) without changing the target (Step 3).

  3. If Step 1 and Step 3 cannot be manually adjusted separately as above, where can I learn more about how age, hearing loss and instrument experience level affect the difference, and how I can adjust them? I looked at both “Personalization” and “Rationales” in Help but that did not seem to address separately changing Step 1 from Step 3 (e.g. starting with less gain).

Sorry if I am being a dense 80-year-old, but I want to do this right.
