We are looking for people who find it hard to hear speech in noisy places, including those who use hearing aids, to join an online training study.

The study aims to improve two new listening and thinking games as a support tool for people with hearing loss.

Nearly all auditory training research out there can be improved with better experimental design. We’re not interested in knowing whether people get better on training tasks with practice, we’re interested in whether the effects generalize to every day function, whether they are better than other, easier or more enjoyable interventions, and whether improvements are clinically meaningful and sustained.

Thank you for your comment. I completely agree. The field has moved well beyond demonstrating on‑task learning, and the real challenge now is understanding how to achieve reliable generalisation to everyday listening, ensure training is engaging and enjoyable, and encourage meaningful and sustained improvements.

Our research is focused directly on this. We are not examining whether people improve on the training tasks themselves; instead, we are testing different task settings within the programme to identify which conditions are most effective for promoting maximal generalisation and sustained improvements. We also worked closely with people with hearing loss to design the training so that it targets situations they find personally challenging, which we hope will support both engagement and ecological relevance.

There is certainly a lot of room for good work in this area, and we hope our contribution will help move things forward.
