I have autism and an acquired brain injury. I’ve been wearing hearing aids for nearly 3 years and I absolutely hate them. I did follow the rules and wear them religiously for 18 months the over stimuli never stopped being a problem for me. It affects my central nervous system and makes me more anxious, I find them really uncomfortable and by the end of the day they really hurt. I wear glasses as well and with both things stuck behind my ears. It causes pain there as well as inside my ear.
I have to use them sometimes because I am profoundly deaf in one year and severely deaf in the other, but they feel like a problem to me every time I wear them, I’m never at ease. And I only wear the one I absolutely have to now.

This does seem like a fairly Positive thread overall, but I’m afraid that has not been my experience at all. So much so that I googled I have autism and I hate wearing my hearing aids, which is how I found myself here. I hope you have a better experience.
I also find that Audiologists really don’t get the experience of neurodivergent people. I wasn’t even warned that I would find things overwhelming in the first six weeks or so adjusting. I was barely sleeping and when I went back to say my anxiety was through the roof and I’m having a terrible time they were like ‘oh yeah, lots of people have that problem’. It could’ve been mentioned earlier, especially since I had let them know that I was neurodivergent and had the brain injury. So part of the problem for me is the hearing aids, part of the problem is the audiologists. I’ve continued to have no particularly positive experience with audiologists even though I’ve traveled up to 2000+km.
Again, I hope you have a better experience but if your hearing loss isn’t that bad you might want to give them a miss.
