When I half-clenched both palms and placed them on the outside of the hearing aid, there was a rustling sound. The rustling sound on the left side was louder than that on the right side. How should I adjust it to balance this sound?
Could this be feedback? You audiologist should have run a test to calibrate feedback after fitting you with the correct domes. Best bet is probably to check with them.
Without knowing details of what brand and model your hearing aids are, some of us will be limited in our advice. Being a newbie at wearing hearing aids myself, I’m limited anyway!
If your hearing aids have a manufacturer app for users to make adjustments, you could check there to see if your microphone volumes are set unevenly. You could adjust the volume up on the right or down on the left using the hearing aid controls on the hearing aids themselves. You could check for cleanliness of the microphone ports, especially on the right hearing aid. You could check for wax build-up, especially in the right hearing aid dome/mold and speaker. You could change your and see whether that changes anything. You could consider whether the skin on your left hand is rougher and therefore noisier than on the right. You could verify whether the rustling sound was made louder on the left or quieter on the right by hair on your head getting in the way unequally. You could consider whether the pressure of your left and right hands was equally applied. If you don’t hear other sounds more loudly in the left than the right, you could shrug and let it go.
The rustling sound is your hands touching the microphones of your hearing aids. I realize as a newbie of hearing aids myself, it sounds weird. When putting on a polo shirt with your hearing aids in your ears, you will also hear a rustling sound as the cloth is touching or moving close to your hearing aid. I also get the same sound if I scratch my head near the side with the hearing aids. As for your volume difference, check your phone app to ensure the volume is set equally on both hearing aids. If it is, then the one with the lower volume may have its clogged.
Start with brushing each hearing aid with the small brush which was included with your aids. Brush especially the dome. I was instructed by my hearing aid specialist, to brush them in the morning so that any ear wax has hardened overnight and can be brushed away easily.
