Infrared Sauna

So I just purchased an Infrared Sauna2. I know the typical advice is not to wear your hearing aids in the sauna, but I would assume that is because of the steam. An infrared sauna doesn’t use steam. The only moisture problem would be sweat, and hearing aids should be able to deal with sweat. And besides, I don’t seem to sweat much. We just did 45 minutes at 114 degrees. My wife was soaked, with beads of sweat pouring off of her. I was pretty hot, but never broke a sweat.

So the question is, would it be safe to wear my aids in an infrared sauna?

My wife is agreeing with you, don’t take them in there. But the sauna has a speaker system, and we listen to podcasts. Plus, we’re in there together and I like to talk to her. I hate that feeling I get now when I take my hearing aids out. Like a pillow is wrapped around my head. Those sweatbands look cool, so I’ll be considering those, thanks for the links.

I don’t know squat about hearing aids, but I spent my entire career in the semiconductor industry. 114 degrees will have no measureable impact on the lifetime of the electronics. Of more concern would be moisture effects on the non-coated parts like the microphones. Even then, unless someone spends a lot of time in those conditions there should be no concern.

The temp is supposed to go as high as 140. I have a suction cup thermometer on the window, and it got to 115 during a 45 minute session today. I’m assuming I have a lot of heat loss at the glass. I need to get a more reliable thermometer mounted to the back wall.

Do you hold the same opinion for 140 degrees?

I work really hard to keep my ears free of wax. And Doubledown’s ear gears suggestion should protect the mics. Would breaching the filters be damaging, or merely annoying?

Reading through these responses, I am becoming slightly tempted once again to get the ear gears and go for it.

Depends on the levels of sweat - goretex filters tend to wick the sweat up and then when it dries the salt stays and blocks the pores - technically dry heat that you can withstand shouldn’t cause a problem, but if you’re sweating profusely under those conditions it can’t be good for the aid.

Thinking on, that level of heat is really not going to do the battery life much good either.
