option to get used phonak L50R at $300, how much worse are they than latest versions?

So i completed a trial of the top tier oticon reveal, i felt it was nice but the price is way too high for me.

My use case is purely for occasional social settings and I have single sided high frequency hearing loss, which further makes the high price of the top tier oticons not worth it.

I chanced upon some Phonak L50rs for $300 and am considering getting them.

What difference in sound shd I be expecting from Phonaks vs the Newest Oticons?

shd I even bother with the Phonaks? my only pair now are a Aliexpress $60 which is not bad, but gets a bit sharp in noisy enivronments.

Hi there, you don't post your audogram as this would be helpful for advice, buts sounds like you could get by with better quality , Apple airpods? As for the L50 R you need to be careful when buying rechargeable battery models, if you don't know if they have been replaced recently then I wouldn't recommend getting them, I'd recommend you go to Costco, you'll save thousands on premium models with great service to boot.

 

Buying used rechargeable have the risk of issues with battery life, just like buying an old used smartphone (as @tenkan said). That said, I’ve bought used HAs and I haven’t had problems (they ones I bought were about a year old).

Plus you will have to pay someone to program them (~$300 or more in the US, price can vary depending on your location). Battery replacements can cost about $250

The L50 is a basic-level aid . It depends on what Reveal you are comparing it to. An equivalent model is the Reveal 3. HearingTracker.com has good reviews. Basic level aids are not the best for noisy environments but they are ok for quiet ones.

I can’t comment on the Oticons, but have recently upgraded from a pair of Phonak L70’s (one tier higher than the L50). In my personal case, with my hearing loss, three different audiologists that I used over the course of owning the hearing aids were never able to program the L70’s to be helpful in even moderately noisy environments. In those environments I was unable to follow or participate in conversations unless using a PartnerMic. Again, that was my personal experience and YMMV.

I think the Phonak L50s are worth considering at $300, especially for occasional social use. Since your current OTC aids sound sharp in noisy environments, focus on speech clarity and comfort rather than premium features. If possible, get them professionally fitted and try them in a social setting before buying. Sometimes, the right setup matters more than the price!
