Pain with REM

I finally had the done for the second time. I live in Portugal and the first time suspect I was the first person the hcp had done. It resulted in very loud and distorted hearing/ sounds, so much so I had to go back next day and asked for them to be returned to normal. These are Oticon Intents 1, purchased in June. Also, after the aides were returned to pre REM level, I had her give me new receivers because I was getting all kinds of sound distortions, artifacts, and echoes. This did not help.

Yesterday, the trainer person came to our town and repeated the REM. It was so incredibly painful I was jumping out of my chair and could barely stand it. She showed me the tiny plastic wires that were touching my eardrums and said they were very soft. Is this a normal experience? I don’t feel any benefit in my hearing, it feels like my husband is mumbling/ not enuncuating more than ever. TV is very loud. I am having trouble hearing people talking around me in my language class, a small quiet. room with 7 people. The artifact distortion sounds are better, but not completely gone. Any advice appreciated.

It’s usually not painful even if your eardrum is touched. It’s generally more of a tickle if anything. You either have hypersensitivity or an infection, which they would have seen on otoscopy.

Can you adjust the volume down in your instruments or app?

Have them check your hearing aids for distortion in a test box or ask them to program a loaner pair the same to see if distortion is still there. If it is, you may have a dead spot in your cochlea where you can’t handle amplification of a certain frequency.

Also consider going to a medical doctor to double check for infection. That said, the procedure pain and distortion should not be related.

I have had done many times over the last 10 years are so. I have never felt any discomfort. My audiologist will do a REM anytime there is a significant change to my aids. New aids, after ear molds changes, after repairs and even a major firmware update.

Last time I had , I had serious pain in my left ear

The audiologist shoved the probe in too deep.

It’s had to be backed out some.
