Hello everyone,
I hope this message finds you well. My name is Julius, and I’m currently a student working on a university project focused on improving accessibility in online learning platforms for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
The solution we’re exploring is called SignMate 3D: an -powered 3D avatar designed to provide real-time sign language interpretation during virtual classes on platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams. As part of our research, we are reaching out to communities who have lived experience with these challenges to gather authentic feedback that can help shape a useful and respectful solution.
I would be incredibly grateful if any of you would be willing to answer the following short questions. Your responses will remain anonymous and will only be used to guide the design and development of the proposed system. Please feel free to answer as many as you’re comfortable with:
Questions:
-
Could you describe your typical experience participating in online classes (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet) when a live sign language interpreter isn’t present? What are the main challenges you face in terms of understanding and engagement?
-
Many online platforms offer automatic captions. In your experience, how effective are these captions for understanding spoken content in real-time? Are there specific situations where they fall short?
-
Imagine an ideal scenario where real-time sign language support is seamlessly integrated into online classes. What would that look like for you? What features or characteristics would be most important?
-
The SignMate 3D concept involves a 3D avatar translating spoken language into sign language. What are your initial thoughts on this idea? Are there any concerns or specific preferences you would have regarding its appearance, placement on screen, or size?
-
SignMate 3D aims to support multiple sign languages, like and , and allow users to toggle it on/off. How important are these features to you? Are there any other customization options (e.g., avatar speed, gender, appearance) that would enhance your experience?
-
If a tool like SignMate 3D were available and effective, how do you think it would impact your (or your students’) ability to comprehend lecture material, participate in discussions, and generally feel more included in online learning environments?
-
Are there any potential concerns or downsides you can foresee with an AI-powered sign language avatar? What would be critical for you to trust and rely on such a system?
Thank you so much for your time and input, it means a lot to us as we aim to develop something genuinely helpful and inclusive. If you have any questions about the project or wish to share thoughts privately, feel free to send me a message.
