I am new to this forum and thank you in advance for your feedback. I wondered if anyone has had a similar experience. I trialed the Genesis for 2 months and they have a lot of very good features, but I had two concerning issues. The first was that in a noisy environment, I could hear what I think might the an issue with the noise filter. I can hear a sound in the background like the noise filter is cutting on and off. This occurs even when I cut the filter off in the app. In a quiet environment, it is not there. It does it in any selected program. Also, speech in noise is only so so. Because of this I returned the aids, but have been told future software updates will fix these problems. I would really like to know others experiences. Thank you

I have trialed a few aids this year and struggle at times in noisy environment. I have not experienced the background filter like you described. I do find that in our living room where we run air filters in the house that they do a good job of determining environment and dampening down the noise. Where as the Unitron Vivante I had could not isolate this and every time I turned my head got pounded with background noise, then filtered then start again if I turned my head again. I also appreciate the tap feature for Edge mode when I am working in different environments and do not need to pull my phone out to switch.
Thank you for your reply. I did not do a very good job of explaining the background noise, but it sounds like a low frequency rumble. The louder the environment, the louder the rumble. I have heard others with same comment. My aud. could not figure it out, but I was told later software versions would take care of it. I am now considering the Nexia. The Edge feature is very good. Thanks again
Somewhere in this blog a user compared his hearing aid with the demonstration model he wore to decide if he liked it. I cannot find that conversation but I too found that the demo seemed to perform best. Did anyone else see the comment?
I am not sure what you need to know. I will try to answer any question you ask from my perspective. I can tell you that I bought my Genesis 24s understanding that they are cutting edge technology and that I would have to cope with “growing pains”. If I had to do the entire thing over, I would buy them again. Having said that, if the app were as good as the aids, frustrations would be fewer.
No “rumble”, but this is an instance where the demo provided better hearaing, as in a restaurant. Now, if I pay particular attention, I can communicate, hear, one person at the end of the table from me. I did have a big problem identifying the direction from which a sound was coming. This is one of those things I find frustrating. It seems improved now. The brochure says the hearing aid will sort of learn the wearer.
I am still on trial for Genesis 24. I plan to keep them after trying Otican Real 1. I don’t understand what you mean by rumble but I do not hear anything notable or bothersome either at restaurant or noisy arena. I have a sound meter on my iPhone so I check the sound levels at noisy locations. One should note that when you invoke edge mode via a tap you fall into automatic edge mode. However, the app allows you to go into manual mode with your choice of enhance speech or reduce noise. I have tried the manual mode and has helped me. It is claimed that edge mode is evaluating the envoirnment constantly. I do not believe this is true and for that reason I often click in and out of edge mode to make it reset itself. I have other issues with Genesis 24 but I will limit my thoughts on the topic at hand.
There are two uses for my landline phone these days. 1. It blocks sales calls. 2. I dial my own cell phone number when I can’t find the cell phone. Take the hearing aids out before dialing becaus they can’t determine where sound is originating.
I have tried to set up the “Fall Alert” following instructions in the app. I have opened everthing so that nothing on my phone should be blocking. After I enter the name and phone contact of the person I want advised, nothing else happens. It is supposed to show “Pending” but it does not.
Do I have to have this adjustment made in the audiology office? Does anyone know?
you should not have to go back to audiology office. I do not use that feature but decided to try it. The app told me that this feature was not active for my aids and I would have to go back to hearing professional to get it activated. So this means yours should be active and should be able to do everything through the app. Sorry could not be more help.
I have just bought a pair of Starkey Genesis 24 Wireless with 312 batteries, I have to say that so far I am beyond impressed, the size which also includes a Power receiver is in my mind excellent, okay they are not invisible but they are far smaller then all the other aids I tried, the Bluetooth works really well with next to no disconnections or cut outs.
I realise that these CIC’s only have one Microphone not two but so far I haven’t had any adverse problems.
The 312 battery life is phenomenal, so far 7 days, with mixed streaming everyday and power near the top end of the aids.
I have been in a restaurant/bar and heard fine.
I also love the app it has been great for my needs, I like how you can alter the main programs and just save them without having to make a custom program, this is way better than most other ’s apps.
I have been really looking forward to using the Edge+ mode, but have found the general program works really well in all the situations I have been in so far but it is early days yet.
I came from a pair of Phonak V90 ’s and so far these Genesis CIC’s have been the best aids I have tried in the past year, which included, Evolv’s ITC, returned as bluetooth was rubbish, Phonak Lumnity, returned as I had a lot of issues with hearing in background noise, and also couldn’t get on with Classic, Oticon Reals, tbf I don’t like ’s but also I was not that impressed with speech in Background noise, Oticon Own, I really liked them but my Aud advised they could not fit a power receiver in the ITC’s so they simply weren’t powerful enough for my needs, tried the Jabra Enhance Pro 10 ITC (full shell), with Ultra Power receivers, but they were massive, to be fair I did like these BUT I couldn’t use the top end due to feedback issues, then last I tried the Philips 9030’s ITC with Power receivers 312, they were okay but was not that impressed with Speech in Noise, also I never really got confirmation of what their Oticon equivalents were, think they may have been Owns, the other issue was that the nearest CostCo to me is 130 miles away and the UK CostCo’s don’t do remote tuning .
So although 1k gbp more I rather have the local Aud and remote tuning on the Starkeys, however I thought the CostCo hearing specialists were the most open and amenable specialist to my needs of anywhere I had been and even though I told them what I was doing they advised they were more than happy to still have my custom. They also hinted they may be getting Starkey equivalent aids in the future.
So to recap I am currently loving my new Starkey Genesis Aids.
I’ve had two months of experience using the Genesis, and while they have a lot of useful features, I have two issues. In noisy environments, I hear background noise, which I think may be due to a noise filter issue, even when I turn it off in the app. In addition, speech in noise is not very clear.
Would you mind expanding on your 2 issues with Genesis, especially speech in noise and the noise filter. I ask this because I think I had a similar experience when they first came out, but Starkey told us they were working on a solution. I experienced a rumbling type sound in the background in a high noise environment. Hard to describe. Turning off the noise filter did not make a difference. I ended up taking them back, but thinking of trying again if they have this problem resolved. Thanks
As I stated in my original post, I trialed the Genesis when they first came out and returned because of some software bugs. I have another week trial now and I find some differences. First, understanding speech in a noisy restaurant has improved and is probably the best of any aids I have tried. The Edge mode is great. I still sense issues with background noise in regular environments. For instance both traffic and car noise is not well suppressed. In addition, as I walk, I can slightly hear the background noise filter cut on and off. Any thoughts from anyone and especially anyone with Genesis AL experience. Thanks
After a lot of experimenting, I found more open domes and a reduction in bass helps dramatically with the hissing or rumble due to background noise. I am not sure yet how it will effect other situations such as speech in noise. Thanks for the suggestion about the crowd program. Anyone having similar issues or thoughts?
