New Costco Jabra Pro 30 question

Apple designs their own chips and then has them made by Samsung and TSMC (and maybe others).
This is called a ‘fabless’ model and is the most common way chips are created these days.

That’s very interesting, thanks for digging this out!
It’s interesting that they call it an ‘advanced hybrids’ factory. It’s not clear what that means, but given the enormous cost for a factory that makes the actual chip dies, I’m guessing that GN’s factory takes ready-made dies made elsewhere, and integrates them with other components that are required for hearing aids (thus ‘hybrids’).
I did a little digging and a 22nm chip factory (that’s what Starkey’s chip is) costs more than $5 billion to build from scratch. Way too much for a company the size of GN.

Well a lot going on here on this thread, but GN ReSound have been around so long that they wouldn’t need to build from scratch as such, more like a addition to existing infrastructure/factory, but 5b is like a hole lot of $$ just for chips manufacturing.

@wtolkien as for Starkey I am not sure it uses Onsemi, especially in EdgeAI model since they state to integrate an NPU in their G2 neuroprocessor, so maybe it is a custom hybrid chip. If that is the case, how can they still use Onsemi?

Totally agree with your review. I just upgraded from the Pro 20 to the 30 and they are a fantastic upgrade. Very satisfied with my Costco service.

Interesting! So you believe that their G2 neuroprocessor chip is actually the E8300? What makes you think so? If so, it would be very promising as its build-in processor appears weak in terms of specifications

If you search for Starkey and Onsemi, you will find that a long time ago Starkey sold their in-house chip development to Onsemi. Onsemi continues to list Starkey as a major customer.
Of course that’s not 100% proof that the EdgeAI uses the E8300, but probably 99%. With this type of product it’s very hard to change chip suppliers because nothing is standardized, everything is proprietary.
With regards to performance, it’s a misconception that chips are fast. It’s the opposite. They have to content with an extremely low power budget, having to run for a full day with a small battery. They are way slower than a typical consumer earbud chip.
Phonak’s chip also only runs at 50MHz, as per a presentation that’s available on Audiology Online:

As a Dane once told me (I used to visit there regularly), Danes specialize in making things that are “very tiny and very expensive”!! And, in my opinion, they are very good at it.

I picked up My Jabra Pro 30 Monday from Costco. They seem to have improved their hearing testing software from 4 years ago, and the programming seemed to do a good job with my hearing aids. My new Jabra 30’s are many times better for hearing than my KS10’s were. I am really happy with the hearing. But the Enhance Pro app really sucks. We had to try at Costco 4 or 5 times to get the app to finish setting up properly. They had to actually call Jabra support and have them walk through a different routine where he used the push buttons rather than inserting the aids in and out of the charger. Also I finally got my old TV Streamer 2 to work, but once I did that the app kept having problems and showing hearing aids not connected and in red , but the streamer was working, but I had no way to control it from the app. I think part of the problem is that I have an older SAMSUNG A53 5G. I just ordered a new TV Streamer+ to see if that helps. Another problem is that if I reset everything and go through setup without connecting the TV Streamer, everything works fine, but in the morning when I put on the hearing aids, my calls and cellphone audio won’t bluetooth to my aids, and I have to unpair and pair for audio streaming to work. I still have a lot of issues to work out. Maybe I need a newer Samsung, or even an Iphone for everything to work smoothly. Anyway thanks to all for your helpful comments.

First, in response to your initial question … as I also maybe away from areas with Costco’s … so I asked for and received a pair of receivers for my Pro 30’s (they are the same for the 20’s) … as I said in my other post … they are not free to Costco like the domes and filters, your millage may vary.
Even though I have a newer Samsung (S23 Ultra) I am having issues with the app … lagging, diconnecting etc., however I think that may be mostly my phone because of all the stuff I have running …
The S23 Ultra has running on Android 15 … according to Resound, they have been having app problems with Android 14 which may be what is on your phone.
I’m not sure if not having BT LE possibly causes issues or improves anything
It feels that the Enhance app is taking a significant amount of processing power and has definitely taken a hit to my battery life.
The A56 would seem to have what you need but with one caveat … I’ve seen phone reviews complain about the battery life but if you don’t use or have a lot of stuff running on your phone should be fine.
I use lots of app on my phone, so even though I hate to spend double, I’ll be buying an S25 soon.

My A53 is running Android 15. I went to the resound support and scanned the compatibility barcode and they checked my phone and gave me back all the data showing Android 15, and said it was compatible. Not sure if this means much. Since the Jabra pro 30, and the Resound Livia 9 are still pretty new, there may be some updates to the app to improve it. I’ll wait awhile before changing phones. The new Jabra 30’s are doing so good that I really could get by without the TV streamer. With the KS10’s, I couldn’t hear any of the TV sound at normal volume. I am 80 years old, and not too keen on changing too much stuff at this time. thanks for your reply.

Hi, the only issue I have had with both my Jabra 20s and now with the 30s concerning phone connectivity, is that it takes a few seconds from answering a call, by either tapping or answering manually, the first few seconds get cut off until the hearing aids connect. I have an iPhone 13 running the latest IOS software. This is a problem with the hearing aids, which are , (Made for iPhone), compatible. I have never had a problem with dropping a call once the hearing aids kick in. If I dial the call, the hearing aids work fine from the beginning to the end of the call.

Thats interesting. I have a S24fe and when i receive a call i get a connection notification which “dings” in my aids immediately prior to my phone ringing in my aids, so when i answer the call, im already connected.

I just ordered a new TV Streamer
Is it the streamer? I’m the same age as you, I also have the KS10’s and struggle with TV sound. So contemplating going for the Jabra 30’s plus the streamer, which right now is included in the price.

I am not sure if it is the streamer. It is just the TV Streamer+ that they have on their website. In the U.S. they are not including TV streamer in the price. My price in California was $1759. They did give me probably two years supply of , domes, and speaker filters. I am still not very happy with the App, but hopefully they will improve it. Just for the heck of it I installed the Resound version called Smart 3d, and found it is exactly the same app as Enhance Pro, down to the software version level. It installs and works the same.

Resound have 3 or 4 different apps. Which seem to work with most of their family of aids. I think it will be the streamer, I don’t think the previous model will work with the Jabra 30’s.

The TV Streamer+ is the newer version. It and the older TV Streamer II work very well with Jabra Pros. No difference in sound quality. I have both streamers working (two different TVs). I even have another Streamer II I bought used on Ebay, but it has a noticable lag.
Im in the Jabra 20s and will trial the 30s next week.
