News Item- hearing aid sounds disturb other people on a plane

It still comes down to leakage. If others can hear your aids you have leakage. Regardless of receiver power (I use HP receivers in both aids), aids should not leak that bad. Just think all of the wasted gain that is just broadcasting into the environment instead of into the ear… And its more like the having your service dog pooping in the aisle of the plane, and then saying, but I need the dog for assistance so, oh well, deal with it. It isnt that hard to be courteous for a few hours.

I agree on this, every-once in a while I ask my wife if she can hear my aids when I’m listening to music (streaming) and she never hears anything, so if there is feedback, then fitting is poor, unless I cover my ears completely I never have any feed back and look at my Audiogram, almost completely deaf and my aids make hearing almost normal, so they are putting out a very loud sound, I use 2P receivers with custom molds.

I’m not sure if you have Phonak Infinio HA, but for your hearing loss, the UP receiver might be better, especially for high frequencies and when there’s a lot of noise around.

You probably have hard audiogram to fit with P receiver, because of bad high frequency frequency hearing. I heard that Phonak UP receiver has low internal noise, so I have just taken the risk and ordered UP. There is forum user @SandraN, who has UP receiver despite good low frequency hearing and she didn’t complain about distortion in low frequencies or so. Bonus: counterintuitively, UP has broader frequency response than P and could provide you better 6-8k gain necessary for ‘s’ sound.

When audio from my phone is streamed to my ha’s, my girlfriend, hearing very well, mostly is not pleased. The shrill noise escaping along the open domes hurts her ears. I myself also do not like to listen to it too long, I envy her good hearing.

My husband said he could hear a voice talking when he got up at night and went to near my hearing aids were in a a charging case. I wonder about it since I wasn’t aware it was happening. It was in another room from where we were sleeping. Maybe it is a malfunction. He said the sound was like a radio on low volume.

I am not against captions and think they need to be widely available. But I am still able to understand speech well enough that I don’t want to have to have captions in my way. I still feel that if I have to have captions I will just read the book.

I had an excellent response when I had jury duty. The people at the Multnomah County Courthouse here in Portland met with me in person beforehand and provided me with an iPad with closed captioning. I talked to them about the fact that I still couldn’t hear the comments from other people who weren’t connected to the closed captioning system. Ultimately, I wasn’t selected for a case, but they still met with me one on one again to get my feedback and to learn what would have made my experience better. Outstanding!

My wife, who has good hearing, has mentioned that she can sometimes hear the sound from my hearing aids from three feet away. They are not turned up high. Perhaps I have not seated the domes well. If the person in the article is a regular flyer he is sitting very close to other unrelated people. Courtesy is always appreciated. Body odor, large girth, etc., are problems on planes. Many people who fly frequently get noise canceling over the ear headphones. If that person has had that complaint before he should get over the ear headphones to protect his neighbors. One time problem? Oh well, put up with it.
