I don’t have anything in the other ear; natural hearing. To that end at least an hour a day I have a plug in the other ear to force as much sound thru the for training; also my motiviation for the tv streamer so that the sound goes more directly to the CI and I block the other ear (not always).
If I tried to force everything thru the app (so defaulting phone calls) I am not at a point that I would be able to hold a conversation. Would impact my ability to do my job during the day.
Did you get the CR310 remote? It can control the processor and streaming
Yes - I have the remote and that is what I am using for the TV streamer. (And also the initial program volume increases to help build me to yesterday’s appointment.) I totally failed to bring in the remote yesterday but will remember on next appt 2/6 in case there will be different programs she wants to put in for me.

I don’t believe she needs the remote to make program changes in your processor.
Something very helpful is having a written list of good and bad things about your hearing. This would include program and app changes. As far as sound/hearing issues include the environment you are in at the time.
That is good advice. When I went in on Monday I left her know that in controlled situations (no other noise) say listening to a phone conversation playing over the car speakers but stopped no background noise or road noise that it “seemed” like I could pick up some words with the but only when increasing the speaker volume. Some of that was taken care of (of course) with the new soft/loud mapping, but she made some other adjustments. Also told her that the off ear did not have the same sound as the on ear - which you said it should - and she plugged in the off ear directly and did something; today it sounds similar. So I will keep notes as I get closer to the appointment. Figure that this first week after adjustment isn’t a real test as I have to get used to everything that changed.
Side note - my magnets, mini mic and a shorter cable will arrive to me tomorrow!
New magnets (lower strength) arrived and in use. With the lower magnet (on both) I was able to remove the soft pad from the Kanso off ear. Also switched to the shortest cable for the on ear and so far I find it makes it more comfortable a there is less of the loop so perhaps less weight “pulling” it down against the back of the ear.
Hearing…adjusted to the higher volumes (took a day or so). I am tryng to have the right ear blocked with my plug as much as possible to force hearing only to the . Also she gave me the other streamer for the TV so set that up and am trying to use the streamer more often to - again - put more brain training work in!
So I have started using the tv streamer when watching tv. Learned that I can mute the sound on the tv (so nothing can be heard with my non ear); forcing me to use/hear exclusively with the CI. Doing everything possible to keep training! I alternate between watching/steaming while reading the captions (always on) and then streaming but either not focused to read the captions/or looking at something else to just hear. In this situation I am understanding most of the shows.
In the car with the heater/fan, road noise etc I struggle to understand the talking radio words. Hoping that as I continue to train (I understand I am very early in the process) that being around simple sounds will not be as detrimental to ability to hear. Early days…but I am believing I am making progress!
Update. Had my 2nd follow up appt today since activation. Today she checked some charts that she could see performance and made a couple of adjustments - but not the full electrode by electrode mapping like last appt.
BUT today was the first test of word recognition. Going into cochlear even with the Oticon More 1 hearing aid, my wrs was 0%. So I knew that I could only go up from there!
I was hoping to get to at least 40% wrs - which I would have been happy with. However, very happy to report that it was MUCH better! Drum roll……
I tested today at 72% wrs! A few of the sentences/voices I couldn’t catch all of the words which she said was pretty normal and with continued work it will improve.
hat was with one-syllable words and validated sentences?
What setup was during that test? CI + HA in the better side concurrently or listening by CI only?
I was in the hearing test booth. The noise was in my good ear so that only the ear was tested. (Similar to pre CI). Test was sentences. No single words.
Thank you! Audi didn’t have any additional recommendations of training. I am still planning to do more of the app word trainings with focus on male voices (since those are ones I struggle with a bit more she said). I do think that the TV streamer to my and muting the tv so my good ear can’t be of use has helped - of course my TV’s always have close caption on.
QUESTION - after my next appt in March she is saying that appointments then move to every 3 months. Is that good or should I push to keep monthly?
Latest update. Appt yesterday whee she each electrode sound was adjusted. Another hearing test. This time was lower than previous - it was 68 words vs 72 prior. But this one was word specific vs the prior was repeat the sentence. She said that the 68 wrs was very good; that the word test is more challenging than the sentence.
While of course I would have loved to gete a higher number/recognition score - at the same time I had a few recent travel trips. One was a trade show which has a lot of people and noise, loud restaurants and lots of talking. In almost all situations I was able to engage in conversation and catch most/if not all of what they were saying. And in situations where I was struggling a bit more, I also noted colleagues with normal hearing needing to ask people to repeat themselves.
So from a wrs of 0 prior to my to today - so 5 months - at cose to 70. I am happy.
Still doing the work. She gave me the Lace training app so have been working with that for the past month (focused on speech in noise). Still working on listening and reading the words to help with training my brain.

This is fantastic news. Not too shabby!
Zero to almost 70 is huge, life changing. Just to let you know, we continue to improve hearing with for years. Try to put yourself in challenging hearing environments. This is how we learn. Your training with old TV reruns streamed to your CI only with captions on is my favorite training tool.

I rarely have actual sound on the tv - always thru the streamer with captions. I do think that has helped a lot. Audi suggested also trying to use the mini mic connected/streaming thru my work computer so that all of my zoom/team meetings sound goes thru the ear. Of couse I have captions always.
She said that there is still adjustments for volume moving forward to get me in the target range. I am noticing since the volume increase changes yesterday that the streaming is even more clear.
I have no regrets. I am so thankful for all of the insights, learnings, encouragement and support from the folks here!

This is new information that’s a biggie. I should have mentioned this earlier. Something I did do was push the volume louder my first year. I believe it was a big part of getting up.
Do you have master volume on your Nucleus Smart app? It enables you to raise or lower volume beyond the regular volume controls.
Do you have sensitivity control? This is another app control that can be very handy during your training. There are times when you are pushing volume up that outside noises are very distracting. By lowering sensitivity you can lower outside noise while maintaining higher volumes closer to you. user shared a very helpful attachment about sensitivity. I should go find it and share it again.

Not this appt - but last month she told me it was o’k to start using the Nucleus App. She thinks that it is better to not start manipulating the sounds right out of the gate. That definitely helped - found that many days I was taking the volume up a bit on the sound itself - including the streamer section. Sensitivity I haven’t really messed with because I wasn’t sure if lowering the sensitiving would impact the sound itself.
That may help me in the car. In the car I pick up the road noise and heater/ac fan almost “first”. LOL
Before the adjustment my master volume ase was at 132; I was manually increasing it over the past month and was up to 138. Today it is at 155 which is where she set it. It seems to take me a couple of days after adjustment for things to sound “clear” again.
Note at my March appt she was o’k with me coming every 2 months but at this point I am still planning to go monthly. I don’t want to go that long between potential adjustments.

If you are going to lengthen your time between appointments you really need to get your phone app going with master volume and sensitivity. Pushing the volume up will get you results quicker if that is what you want. You will hear more for your brain to learn. Details will be more clear.

Good to know. Audi didn’t tell me that outside of after initial programming she tole me to keep clicking up the sound on the remote when I could to get it to 10 before next visit. Which I did. I will certainly work on the volume now that I realize that would be helpful - I was thinking I was to adjust it up only if I needed it. Thank you!!
