Problem with my N8
Is anyone else having problems with their N8 just switching scan automatically? My AuD gave me a music program in August. My usual scan is FF but it automatically jumps to my music program. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why my N8 was so noisy. Road noise in the car was horrendous. Just every day environmental sounds were exceptionally loud, and I kept turning the sensitivity down. It had got to the stage that I’d stop wearing my processor for a day or two because of the incessant noi…

This thread has great information about our Cochlear sensitivity control. Look for bi-modals post. He added attachments from Cochlear s audiology training material. It’s pretty deep reading but very informative. It sure helped me understand these controls better. I plan to take some of this to my next mapping for possible hearing improvements.

I think about getting a 2nd opinion every other month or so. But it doesn’t change the history of my hearing loss in that ear. This ear is congenital and has never heard high frequencies for over 70 years.

My thoughts are if I get it implanted and I don’t get a fair result I’m worse off than I am now. If I lose what’s left of my residual I’m worse off than I am now. I won’t know how much residual I’ve lost until after the surgery then it’s too late to wish I had left that ear alone.

@bimodal I was born 7 weeks premature way back in the 50’s. The medical staff told my parents it was possible I could be deaf due to the prem birth. Medical technology & weren’t available back then, neither was . When I started school at 4.5 yrs we used to have a medical team of Drs, optometrist, audiologist and nurses visited the schools. My hearing loss was picked up by this team when I was 4.5 yrs old. When we got a telephone way back in the late 50’s my hearing loss became more noticeable. I couldn’t hear the other person on the phone using my L ear. My parents were told way back then my hearing loss was due to my prem birth.

Meanwhile, all of the “regulars” stepping in with encouragement, guidance and suggestions has been amazing.

Good to hear from you again @Mickeycee. Back ground noise is the one problem that the doesn’t address very well. Most CI users have the same issue

I went walking on Frankston/Dandenong Rd, with CI on scan 2 FF. I started off with sensitivity on 12, as I walked I turned it down slowly as I went. While 9 isn’t perfect 8 just cut out too much. 9 for me seemed to be reasonable. I next went to Doncaster shopping town. I did the same thing in the shopping center, trial and error, I was reasonably happy with 9. So that where I had it locked. My wasn’t all that happy but she did make 9 my default.

I tend to agree with your audiologist on this one. I know it’s easy to turn the volume down when it’s uncomfortable. Uncomfortable is usually new environments we haven’t been in or not often. They are opportunities to train our brain new sounds and how to deal with them.

The thing is it didn’t affect the volume at all. It just cut down on the white noise in the background.

UPDATE. Appt today (I am electing to go monthly for follow up/adjustments etc). Today appt - no updated word/sentence testing that will likely be next appt. Didn’t update individual settings for each electrode but were able to increase my overall volume again. I was at 158 last appt (after increase) since that appt had taken the master volume up on the app to 161. Left today with volume at 166.

Last couple of weeks attended a few of my niece’s lacrosse regional and state playoff games. Outdoors, some days windy, music and loud speaker announcements, metal bleachers. That combination I did struggle a bit. In fairness, it was sometimes a struggle with my “good” ear too.

I have found that I gravitate towards the N8 vs the Kanso on most days. Which going into the I was convinced that I was a Kanso girl all the way. :slight_smile: At my core I still am - but if I anticipate going outside if it is windy I just stick with the N8 so I don’t knock the Kanso off every time I try to get my hair back in place. LOL But at least with the deafmetal clip the Kanso doesn’t fall anywhere; and once we got the correct lower magnet strength no headaches.

So I am 6 months out from initial activation - the tons of learning, patience, focus and time - paying off. And THIS group has played a significant role in my progress with your insight, guidance, suggestions and support. Truly appreciate you.
