Worth repairing one hearing aid?

I’d suggest going to Costco where you can get a new set for something in the $1500 range if I recall, and probably one with replaceable batteries as well.

You can get lot of hearing aids in $200 to $500 range. $1,500 range are in for huge profit by placing name brand label on it like tennis shoes. Mostly online are way much lower. Shop around and compare carefully.

Chrishardofhearing, For those with arthritis and neuropathy, on top of a lifetime of clumsiness, rechargeable batteries are the way to go!

I’ve tried, twice, to change the battery on my car lock thing, and parts flew all over the kitchen table. (The third time I needed one my son-in-law did it for me.)

At age 78 my hands have the dexterity of whatever came before a first generation robot. But your advice may well be great for a younger, more nimble, HA user!

I get it repaired for around 125.00 dollars. The average is 95.00 to 200.00 dollars. Anything above this is greatly inflated at your expense. You need to shop around. eBay has a service category for hearing aid repair. It is best to go there to start.

thanks i will look into it. explore more options! i like the rechargeable battery commodity, the regular battery last about 5 days and the package is hard to find in stores if i need right away.

Hi there, I’m in Perth, Western Australia and found UCan_Hear hearing aid repairer in Shakopee, Minnesota USA.

It was a completely seamless experience. My right Phonak P90 hearing aid was returned with a new battery working again. Postage was high though. Cost of repair was US$104 plus shipping. And shipping from Western Australia was US$50 each way. There are no repairers in Australia.

I’d bought my hearing aids second hand from a US seller in 2022. When the left hearing aid bean wouldn’t charge in 2025 I sent it to Phonak to have a battery replacement. No warranty because bought overseas. Then no replacement because no serial number in their database. It might have been claimed on insurance?

Weirdly the returned left bean has worked well for a whole year.

Then in February 2026 the other right bean hearing aid completely died. Wouldn’t charge. I contacted UCan_Hear after hearing about them on this forum. He has excellent eBay feedback reviews. I can recommend his services. I felt he definitely earned my trust. I sent my packaged bean, it took no time for the repair and then it was sent back to me. The fixed hearing aid arrived ready to use immediately, all fitting settings as before. I do have an audiologist but did my own fitting. She’s been very helpful when I needed custom molds.

I shall be sending the left hearing aid to UCan_Hear soon because it is only holding about 12 hours charge now. I do top up charge at about mid afternoon to get me through the evening. I also have a pair of Phonak P90 312 replaceable battery hearing aids to use.

And a final bit of good service is that the repaired bean (which wasn’t working at all, so would have been tossed into landfill) has been working well. But it also falls to 8% charge at mid afternoon, very suddenly from 50%, in about 20 minutes. I notified the repairer and he has offered to fix that right hearing aid bean free of charge, when I send both of them. It’s not the cost of repair but the shipping costs that are high.

Still, the alternative was to spend AU$6K on a new pair. So I am well pleased with this outcome.

You might consider looking on Ebay and see if there are any Starkey Livio 1000 aids for sale. They go for around $400 a pair here in the US on Ebay.

Mine lasts an average of up to 10 days in my Phonak. I am not a fan of charging, since if it stops during the day and youré stuck, then you have to take it off and wait for it to charge fully again; not good. A battery is a way to go; pop in another and set it for a week or two.

Where have you found analog aids? I’m curious to try a pair but it’s not easy to find and I don’t need high power which may even be risky. You use them just for music?

Yes, I own 5 Phonak and 2 Unitron and about 10 other analog hearing aids. I have been buying from people and online. I had two digital Phonaks, and it is not good at all for my music and I sold one already. I dislike digital; it controls the natural sound. It blocks the sound at long range. Meaning, if I hit a note and it is supposed to travel like an echo, it cuts it short and makes it unnatural. In this aspect, it is terrible. Even my repairman agreed with me. I can tell the difference without anyone telling me. I wear special JBL headphones without the hearing aid and it is closely related and more natural in sound to analog than digital.

I have two analog Unitron but it is powerful. It is best if you take it to an audiologist and have it adjusted. I have several over-the-counter analog hearing aids for moderate hearing loss, and it is already set.

Yes, chargers are known to break down. Once that happens, it is very expensive to repair and have a short lifespan. Not worth it. Plus, with a battery, you can put it in right away without any worry in the world and not worry about expensive charger repairs.
