How can I be sure that I am not programming a dead horse

I have been increasingly dissatisfied with my attempts of programming my Jabra hearing aids using Resound’s Smartfit 2.0. Quite drastic program changes don’t seem to result in meaningful changes to my hearing ability and my wife seems to be speaking a foreign language 90% of the time still. The TV app. and seem to work OK. The simple test of cupping either ear results in silence. Is there any way that Smartfit can check that the aid is actually working. My Costco vendor has been quite offensive re. self programming.

Do you have or form factor? If the latter, which domes you use or what is diameter of vents in your earmolds (also in BTE)?

What power receiver are you using? Medium power?

Well first up, you have to have a basic understanding of what your doing before starting, read the user guides and understand what your plans are before starting, it’s all quite easy really, a good thing is SmartFit has a demo simulation mode, here you can explore how things work, making changes directly to see what actually happens when you make adjustments, so first off you want to make a first fit based on your audogram and let SmartFit do the fitting, just make sure you enter the correct acoustics and experience level, SmartFit by default has their own proprietary formula, you can expect it to be programming less then standard formula, like NAL, etc.

Read the user guides before starting.

The Resound SmartFit has a diag test. Launch the test device feature from the instrument menu.

You can also run the feedback measurement tool. If the aids are not producing sound , the test will show an error (or a feedback curve that looks too perfect)

If streaming works , there could be a problem with the mics. However, both aids failing at the same time is not likely to happen.

The easiest way to find out what is going on : create a new client , connect the aids and factory reset them. Do a new fit and check if the mics are working . If not , it may be a hardware failure

Edit: I removed my comments re:Jabra 20 because said he explained later that he has older Jabras ( that I’m not familiar with)

I understand, acoustic seems good assuming all elements are fully functioning with new filters, perhaps consider new receivers if your present are e. g. ~5 years old, etc. @tenkan and @OcramSagev have also given good advices.

If your feedback test will give you decreased level of feedback threshold, perhaps you need new tubes or even earmolds if they are few years old.

What’s your percentage in each ear separately and binaurally?

Thanks for your responses. Using Smartfit 2.2. I find the Diag test when run shows a list of properties which seems to be its specifications. However the Guide mentions that it is to be used in conjunction with a test Box which I do not have. I still have not been able to find the feedback measurement tool ! My new patient created this afternoon is as silent as my previous one. I am not sure where I can find figures. Sorry, at 91 I’m no longer the sharpest pensil in the box

If resetting them to factory default in SmartFit and reprogramming does not fix the issue then you have a hardware problem.

Since you said you are able to stream , the problem is most likely not with the receivers .

At this point , I can only suggest that you talk to Costco . Those aids are most likely almost 5 yrs old . The repair charge is $135 per aid per link below

Costco’s warranty is three years. After three years the charge is $135.00 per hearing aid for repair or battery replacement. After five years the manufacturers do not accept aids from Costco for repair or battery replacement. Costco will continue to supply domes and wax guards and will retest hearing every two years for as long as you own your hearing aids.

Thanks for you timely response. I think you have confirmed the answer to my question is “yes”. However I have to go through the motions. took the aids to COSTCO this morning. Yes the aids are out of warranty and if I insist on sending them back to the factory , price will be $C 250 per aid. However they would attempt to repair in house for free. I have an appointment for July 8th for that. The $C500 charge will probably be the most sensible route at my age level.
