Oticon More and ios 15.4 update

Thanks for your experience, I haven’t updated my hearing aids yet as my aids come from the and I will net be able to update before the first of May. My issues were mostly with the ON app connectivity when using the TV adapter so i.stopped using the app. But now with IOS15.4 the iPhone control of my aids will stop functioning and it takes a restart of the iPhone or aids, and even then it may take both restarting my phone and aids. Apple this afternoon admitted to a number of open cases for similar issues and different hearing aid brands.

I found very early in my historic adventures, that pairing to both my iPhone and iPad, and leaving on on both devices, caused the HAs to constantly attempt to switch/connect to both, like an either/or constant.
My solution to this was to connect to one device only and switching BT off on the other.
In other words my iPhone 12 Pro, is the main continuous paired connection, with the TV repeater being switched in when required.
I’m running Oticon OPN 2 Minirite aids which are probably due to be updated, but as I have no operating problems using both the Oticon On and the Accessability controls as and when required.
I do constantly have Apple Music playing in the background for approximately six to eight hours, then it’s onto the TV adapter for another six to eight hours.
This has been going on for about 10 years without any major problems.
The only OTICON currently being experienced is my wife’s hearing aids have succumbed to the 15.4 iOS update by losing the Streaming Equaliser, and the Oticon On pairing ability completely. So she is currently completely bypassing the Oticon On App and using the iOS accessability hearing aids functionality through the quick access options as available with the top right corner down swipe.
She would dearly like to regain access to either the Oticon On streaming equaliser or a working alternative if
Such is available.

I don’t use the app at all it isn’t even installed, I can do all needed programs changes, and volume changes either from the aids are the iPhone, having the iPad and iPhone paired is not an option but something I do at times to verify updates and issues. I do a lot of testing and helping of my fellow veterans. I also do volunteer work at the local clinic, mostly helping my fellow veterans transition into wear hearing aids, and helping them learn how to explain their issues and needs to the audiologists.
I am a retired IT Professional that has to stay busy some how.

Exactly what I found. From what I know the P90/KS10 using traditional are equipped for multiple BT connections. Mores don’t do well with multiple, constantly switching as you said. I only connect my iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Without using the ON app and not having it even installed the aids don’t do that constant switching when having my aids paired and connected to my iPhone and iPad, the issue since 15.4 has been that my iPhone will not reconnect after I have my aids set to the iPad for streaming.
When paired to both I can change programs and volume from either iPhone or iPad. My iPad has older hardware and it will always connect to my aids, but the IPhone 13 doesn’t reconnect without a restart of iPhone or aids

Just noticed that after resetting my iPhone and watch I can now make program and volume changes from my watch.

I worked with Apple support yesterday and was as advised to do a reset of my iPhone, which caused me to also reset my watch. This has given me back the capability to make volume adjustments and program changes from my watch. I don’t use the ON app at all, not even installed. I have the latest firmware on the iPhone, watch and iPad, but my More1 aids aren’t updated to the latest firmware. From talking to Apple and Oticon there seems to be upcoming updates to both the aids and IOS. Neither will admit to bugs or failures in the firmware but we all know there is. I can without the ON being installed have my aids paired and connected to both the iPhone and iPad but don’t advise it. I can disable the Bluetooth on the iPhone to stream from the iPad and then reverse the process to stream from the iPhone now.
The total reset of both the iPhone and watch is a pain and not to be done lightly.

By reset do you mean a total wipe of the phone?

Would love be able to get more control on my watch but unsure if I want to take the hard reset route.

Just received this reply from Oticon for a review I left on the Apple App Store:

" …thank you for your feedback. Hopefully the issue a lot of iOS 15.4.0 users are experiencing is a temporary one. Please, remember to update the Phone’s iOS as soon as the new update is available. Meanwhile, if you find the Hearing Aids disconnected, please forget them in the Accessibility MFI menu and pair them anew. If you need further help, please reach out to appsupport@oticon.com. This solution still appears to be a non starter with the older phones. I did a hard reset on both my iPhone Xr and my watch 7 and I still get nothing on the watch other than the headphone volume blank message like before. Really doesn’t matter to me since the side button on the phone works just fine for me. I’m sure there are some scenarios where having the watch be able to control my aids would be a benefit but for me they would be few and far in between.

Yes I did, but they told me for best results not to restore from backup.
Be advised I am still having some issues, and have lost the watch control again after a restart. I can get it back by forgetting aids and pairing again. There has to be intermittent issues in the IOS 15.4 that makes the iPhone loss control of aids while showing the aids connected.

Thank you. Doesn’t sound like worth doing, particularly if the workaround is temporary. I couldn’t really do without restoring a backup as it would take too long to put things back together.

Apple should hire an wearer in their QA department. They clearly don’t have one.

I have a nephew that is a developer for Apple. The reason Apple started MFI in the first place was because of the number of employees with hearing issues. The problem is very complicated to deal with. I did software QC in the past and believe me you find and fix one thing and break something else. With limited time to prepare updates there will always be things that get missed. My nephew has asked me to beta test, but my resources are limited, and I can’t take a chance that my phone gets messed up.

I think you are absolutely right in that its a complex system and even if they discover a bug, fixing it is a different story subject to the release schedule and resource availability even when you know what’s wrong.

That said, I would prefer some transparency on what the issues are. Especially since in my experience some of these bugs we run into are not new, obscure or hard to find. We as wearers find the problems right away. For example, the concept of connecting to multiple iOS devices simultaneously has always been problematic but there is no clear acknowledgment or explanation.

With that rant over, I am still happy it all works as well as it does… for sure :smiley:

Your rant has been delivered to Apple developers a number of times in the last few months, and possibly years. I have been on the phone with Apple support and Oticon support a number of times since 15.4 came out. And the app reviews smoke with the complaints.

I appreciate you taking the time to properly raise the issues and I myself should do more to raise the issues directly with Apple (I have in the past). After all, this is life-changing technology.

I wonder if you can only use the Apple watch to control the aids if you have MOREs? I have 12 Pro iphone, Apple watch 6 and OPN S1 aids; I never was able to use watch to control the aids (without using the app) even before iOS 15.4 , so I’m not going to go through the hassle of reset/restore phone and watch because I seriously doubt it would work… I hate the ON app… I NEVER get any notifications in the app either…I asked Oticon and they said: “gee, we don’t know… maybe the aids aren’t connected” … seriously? I know the primary, and most important reason for hearing aids is hearing help, but if you’re going to make MiFi hearing aids, you need to be able to support them … rant over …

I never had issues before I believe IOS15.3 with the hearing devices control on my watch 3 and now 5, it worked for my OPN1, OPNS1, and my More1 aids.

Remember this isn’t just issues with Oticon, I am reading that all MFI aids are having issues.
