Call routing while in the car

I have an iPhone which connects to my car’s ICE and is also connected to my AMBIO S77 .

When away from the car, the audio from the phone is routed to my HAs, which is as desired. But when I am in my car, I would like the audio (and call management controls) to be routed via the car’s ICE. Not so much of a problem when making a call, as I can still initiate a call using ICE, but I cannot answer a call. In fact if someone calls, I have to switch off my HAs and let the car’s ICE take priority and present the answer call screen.

Is there any way to make the ICE take priority over the HAs while connected?

I know that it is possible to stop automatic routing and force calls to the HAs or to the ICE. But I’m hardly likely to do this every time I get in or out of the car. Its an automatic prioritisation that I am looking for.

I’m on iOS 18.6.2 on an iPhone 11. So not IOS 26 in this case.

the issue is the opposite inasmuch as I want audio to switch to the car when connected (last connected device) and back to the otherwise. This sounds like what this fix enforces. Sadly though not relevant as I’m not on that version.

That was a real surprise for me. The phone has been receiving minor updates over the last year in the 18.* family. Not sure what happened to 19-25!
After seeing your post I requested a software update check and there it was 26.01. Downloading now.

I even checked my wife’s iPhone 12. That was on 18. Family. Again I checked for update and it is loading 26.01.

I’ll check the behaviour under 26. with and without the setting in the morning.

Just checked and apparently Apple have decided to number their releases by the following year. So their 2025 release was 26. I suppose it is after the fashion of car manufacturers releasing models named after the year they are going to be sold in rather than when the model was created.

Change for changes sake.

Now on IOS 26 with the AirPlay & Continuity setting “keep audio with headphones” set to off, and the audio still defaults to the hearing aids regardless of whether I am connected to the car’s ICE.

As a slightly less inconvenient option, I’ll Accessibility-Hearing devices - “audio Handoff” setting to off and hope that that stops the grabbing control when in the car. That will mean I will have to manually switch audio to the HA when not in the car - but at last that won’t give me 6 points on my driving license.

When I am in the vehicle I have my phone set to automatically go into driving do not disturb. While I could pair my phone to the Jeep’s entertainment system I chose not to. Being hard of hearing and 78 years old I don’t want any distractions. I have been stopped at a checkpoint and ask about my phone and said it was in the console set on don’t disturb. The policeman even asked if it was connected to the vehicle and I said no, and asked if he wanted proof. But if my wife or family called me the call would alert me by way of my hearing aids and smart watch. They know I would find a safe place to stop and call them back. I am not even sure he noticed my hearing aids. He never asked about them.
