My Costco fitter was pretty open about the fact that he didn’t know all the hear in noise options. On my second visit, I told him I’d been reading the ReSound website and wanted either Intelligent Focus or Clear Focus. He didn’t know the difference, but since Intelligent focus wasn’t an option, I just told him I wanted Clear Focus. I believe Clear Focus is the default setting and that’s what I would have had initially if I didn’t ask for my old favorite, Autoscope.
Interesting, I have had my Jabra EP 30s for a year and Intelligent focus was the choice she showed me. I wonder if she can add another, “Hear in Noise” card and make the second one Clear Focus.
Yes you can have 2 different programs, so they can be the same with different settings.
Guys I’m sure I read (maybe @david.hendon ) that you have to have the directional microphones set in such a way or something to get the intelligent focus option? I don’t have Viva to confirm, but the is what makes Viva platform what it is, one would think this is “on” by default!
Yes you can have two versions if the same program (or card) with different settings if you want. Resound/Jabra allow four programs to be set up.
Intelligent Focus is only available on the rechargeable battery version of the Resound Vivia 9. This is known as EP30 when branded as Jabra and sold by Costco. But it’s the exact same hearing aid. If you set up a pair of EP30s from scratch, then in the Hear in Noise program/card, Intelligent Focus is the default offered in the fitting software SmartFit. But if you use the settings that you already had in EP20 (or Nexia) then it stays with the already-selected option of Clear Focus. Intelligent Focus is down the bottom of a long list and the fitter will only see it if they scroll right the way down. It should show up in bold as it’s the recommended default setting.
Intelligent focus uses a second chip which has a large language model on it. This identifies which of all the sounds it hears is speech and steers the microphones on the two aids so as to focus on the speech and not the possibly louder non-speech noises in a different direction. You only get the benefit of this second chip if you have Intelligent Focus selected in the Hear in Noise card/program. The chip is turned off in all other instances, which is important because it consumes a lot of power, reducing your battery life from about 30 hours to about 9 hours.
