Fair enough. If you’re thinking this way then I’d consult a lawyer to see whether you’re opening yourself up to any legal liabilities for providing a platform that facilitates the sale of prescription products and associated products. We don’t want the whole forum to be shut down because of potential legal action.
Maybe for those categories that talk about diy and sales a disclaimer/terms & conditions page appears first outlining that this is not medical advice or whatever the wording should be. ie. you’re at your own risk.
I think it’s a legal grey area. The license terms of hearing aid software specify it is intended to be used by trained hearing care professionals to limit liability for the manufacturers if someone gets harmed from self-programming. I’m not in favour of self-programming in general, but I have some sympathy for individuals in countries where audiological care is terrible and for professionals who work in audio engineering or the music industry who have greater knowledge than the average person and a greater need for individual customisation than the average person.
The hearing aid industry and fitters/audiologist drove most self programmers to doing it. Between audiologist/fitter fitting failures and outrageous cost for something that helps people hear it drove most self fitters to . I for one had zero reason to self program until I was rolled under the bus by this hearing aid industry.
I have tried both audiologist and fitters, the plaque on the wall has very little to do with the quality of hearing aid fitting. This forum a flat full of disgruntled members who understand what I just said.
Perhaps @AbramBaileyAuD if it’s not already been suggested, some sort of tool to crop images for the new site, or a recommendation for an app… At present I rarely post up any images, as they are invariably too large to post! As we are all aware, images can be very helpful…Cheers Kev
I’m entitled to have an opinion on the matter. You’re allowed to politely disagree with it, but be nice about it. I know what it is to be trodden down by unprofessional professionals. I’m a human being first. I’m also a person who goes around fixing the errors that others make and improving the practice of professionals who have let their practice become unsafe.
That doesn’t mean that self-programming is for everyone or that most people should be doing it. I’m sure there are plenty of people who have tried it and failed. You just don’t hear about that much on this forum because people are quiet about when what they do doesn’t work out.
In my country the average clinical standards are much higher, as are satisfaction rates. If you’re wanting to do the best for others in your shoes, advocating for higher standards and putting pressure on the industry is something you can do to improve the situation for everyone. Don’t let self-programming be the end point of what you do.
I respectfully disagree with you. When disagreeing with someone it is polite to couch your language with a few pleasantries to make the other person not feel bad. The absence of these cues gives the reader no indication as to the tone of your writing and when this is a repeated pattern it eventually gets interpreted as hostility. If you don’t want to be misinterpreted please make a effort to be nicer. Given your experience I wouldn’t be surprised if you were transferring your negative feelings towards professionals who’ve let you down towards me. This is how I’m feeling.
Yeah @AbramBaileyAuD exactly this, it usually says something along the lines, “This file is over 3mb, please reduce its size”! Thank you Abram Cheers Kev
So you have insider knowledge. Are you selling these products? How have you found them? Do they have an MPO control? Are they the reason for starting this topic?
I don’t see caveats or pleasantries in that. You might have a lumber/bodily interface issue there.
Though, to your wider point earlier in the thread: I agree, most clients don’t have wherewithal to complete the process as things stand. Is that a function of how the industry wants to keep its barriers up, though?
It’s okay to argue on here Rick & @Hearing_Potential as long as it remains civilised, me and @Um_bongo had many a rip roaring arguments over the years, but we tolerate each other, in fact I have a lot of time for Stephen… As a former self programmer myself, Rick’s opinions carry weight with me, as do yours @Hearing_Potential it’s always nice to be nice… You can argue without any hostility! Cheers Kev
Would you consider adding a tag/button to mark a reply as generated/assisted? Even better if readers could filter/hide these replies. I recognise this would be a bit of an honour system, but it would improve my experience with the forum greatly. For me personally, if I want to hear what ChatGPT has to say, I’ll go to ChatGPT.

That doesn’t mean that self-programming is for everyone or that most people should be doing it
I’ve been on this forum for many years. I’ve never seen anyone claim that self programming is for everyone or that most people should be doing it. Quite the opposite. In fact, considering the large percentage of people who never learned how to stop their VCR from blinking 12:00, your job is perfectly safe from DIYers. Artificial Intelligence on the other hand… Not to worry though, there are online courses you could take to become a plumber etc. will never be able to stop faucet drips or realign a door latch.
As for in general, I’m currently benefiting greatly from a lifetime of practicing it. More fires in , living in an evac zone for the second time in five years. Most people had to leave and stick their hand out to government to the tune of $200 per day per person. A shocking number of them left their freezers full even though the grid was down, and that brilliant decision will be rewarded by the government taking away their biohazard for disposal and providing a new freezer. Geez. But I was able to keep the power on, navigate back roads for supplies, and live pretty comfortably at zero cost to taxpayers. I didn’t have to do any firefighting this time but I did check on some abandoned homes and emptied the fridge and freezer at one place thereby saving taxpayers a couple grand. And of course I could keep my aids charged and even make programming changes if the need came up. Many more people could do likewise if they made the effort.
One of the participants in one of the topics has reminded me that for my own peace of mind i like to be able to set an individual to ignore. I’d sure like to be able to set my own personal black-ball on individuals on the new system.
