She gave me the Lace training app so have been working with that for the past month (focused on speech in noise). Still working on listening and reading the words to help with training my brain.
What’s your opinion about LACE app? Is it worth the time and effort?
She setup training in noise - going thru it. Not sure yet if it is helpful but certainly training. LOL Willing to try and do everything to get maximum success.
I have severe loss, no ; Phonak Sphere . I did the LACE training (about $99 USA as I recall) and found it to be helpful. The presentation of short sentences by male or female speaker with increasing amounts of noise and/or speed of speech is the primary training parameters. As I recall the app progresses/decreases difficulty depending on how you performed with the prior presentation.
I believe when I had gotten things I had researched how it was created, the validation studies, etc. I think it was a well designed approach, and the increments in levels of difficulty somewhat optimized toward success and keeping motivation up and not beinng so easy that overall progress was too slow to have real world transfer.
Thank you for this info. I honestly did not ask a lot of questions about it - was just doing what I was told. I am glad that you know more and found it helpful in your situation too.
Prior to my while I truly believed by was helping testing showed 0 wrs; so while I am not at 100% now the CI has definitely brought words back in! Truly appreciate your insight on the app!
Hi there. I did my first 13 years ago. In my first year, I did a new mapping session per month, and it helped me SO MUCH. My outcome is fantastic. By now, relax and enjoy the new sounds. Anxiety does not help.
NEW update! Just finished my latest appt with audi. No program/volume change this time around as she wants to wait until next time. In my April appt everything was adjusted and it took me about 7-10 days to hear more clearly again.
So today she wanted to test my wrs score and let my brain continue to settle at current program. Next month likely will adjust again.
BUT testing. She did both words and sentences.
Words - I was 72% today; so up from last month.
Sentences - she was amazed. 94%!
So going from 0 to this is fantastic. I don’t think I have hit the ceiling yet!
Sincere thanks to everyone who has shared their insight, experiences and support thru this process!
When you are out and about, do you feel like your hearing is that good?
Yes and no. It is definitely much better. But I still struggle if someone talks extremely softly, if there is a lot of surrounding noise and some accents.
With my TV streamer it is awesome. My car talk radio - with road noise and air conditioning sounds I struggle with some voices.
Definitely going in the right direction. That last adjustment that took me from 134 to 155 made a huge difference.
There are times when in noise I use the app to take the mic sensitivity down.
There are times that I use the app to adjust the master volume. Mostly it is at 157 now.
I have learned though that I don’t want the test directly after adjustment (like last time).
They even asked if I had time to talk to a candidate in for an appt that had questions and wanted to talk to someone that had one!

This is very normal. Testing in a booth versus out in normal life are two different things. The both is a great example of what you can do out and about with more experience.
The soft spoken people and accents will get much better as you bump up the volume and you acclimate to the louder sounds.
You are doing so great you might feel like you are not doing well out and about. Don’t be discouraged, it will come because you are really doing fantastic.
Try to get music into your life if it’s something you enjoy. Now is the time. Getting into those difficult hearing situations will teach you to hear better. Practice practice.
They are fantastic results for you. It’s wonderful to see another positive outcome from a member on this forum. This is so well deserved
For me understanding people with accents is very hard for me. Even with increased volume I struggle. They seem to speak fast running there words together, then add an accent.
Trying to understand people in a room that’s very noisy is another difficult one.
All said - while OF COURSE I would love 100% wrs and 100% word recognition, I came into it with 0 so truly appreciate the progress to date. Still have room on volume to increase to hit the target threshold so that will likely help as well.
I consider this absolutely to be a success.
Lace App and streaming the tv to my with the actual tv volume low/off has definitely helped make my brain learn CI sounds. Of course the tv has captions on which also helped the training.
I found having my sensitivity on 12 as the default setting, I was picking up far too much white noise in the background. I discussed this with my resulting in my default setting being changed to 9,

This is really interesting Sheryl. I am currently grappling with both this and ForwardFocus in trying to cut down background sound. I find also find that with Sensitivity on 12 that at times I’m picking up too much background sounds like cars/trucks going by when I’m at home, which quite frankly I don’t really want to hear. So, I reduce the Sensitivity to 10 or 9 and even sometimes 8. The only catch is that, at least for me, if you want to converse with others whilst the Sensitivity is on the lower number I find clarity of speech is effected on this lower number. So then sometimes I will just use Forward Focus as well, or instead of, the Sensitivity setting to manage the background sound. As yet unfortunately I haven’t managed to find the perfect kind of balance, but background sound is certainly my main bugbear at the moment.
