@jtl I guess you have to hold your phone up to use the hearing aid microphone.

So I went to the Costco again to see the fitter with the most experience with molds. And I forgot to bring the molds I had!! She saw no indication in my file that he’d made molds or what kind! I thought that they had concha locks, but she finally discovered from Jabra that is was skeleton locks.

She made new impressions for molds deep in the ear. I forgot to mention what material, so presumably she is making them silicone.

She left it to harden a lot longer than the other fitter. I asked about keeping my mouth open, and she said, yes, chew gum. So I did for a long time.

When she took it out, she said that my ear canals are straight, rather than having a bend inside, so she’ll give me sports locks to help keep them in.

She said that when some people talk, the jaw moves a lot, making the domes/molds migrate out, which I’ve experienced a lot.

Then, when I put the Power domes back in, she looked and she put them much deeper in than I had them before. ‘‘She said that they had to be deep inside. Well, I would say that it was a fruitful visit whether the Jabras work or not. Nobody else told me these things.

Right away everything is way louder! Either because the domes are in much deeper (most likely) or because she programmed them differently, or both.

And so far, the calling streaming is much better, although I’ve only left vms.

PS

Now the calling seems to be fine—at least for 2 calls! Do you mean that it was that simple to fix the problem that I’d had since August, and I couldn’t get help to fix it??! What it took was a much more experienced fitter, and all of these months of me doggedly pursuing it! Yeesh! No, I don’t give up.

And this was after again taking a long subway ride and walk in the cold to get there, although the weather was comparatively balmy today, in the 20’s! And the sun was out, making everything look so much better!

@shootist

Yes, that’s the good news! And it is good news!

And the bad news is that, judging from my experience alone, that the lack of training and experience of some of the Costco fitters is such that most people would have returned the aid long ago, and I trudged on, when I should have given up on Costco long ago, and/or given up on this aid long ago. If I had found another choice, I would have run with it. Meaning, if I had a referral to a private or hospital-based audiologist with a good reputation.

Somehow there needs to be a way to get referrals to good Audis/fitters when people need them. But I have no idea how that would happen. It seems like HT could start a way to implement this. Although, practically, it isn’t practical! There seems to be a great deal of turnover at Costco, which speaks to their not being trained or paid enough, I think. But Audis who aren’t at Costco likely don’t have this much turn over.

And to tell the truth, I finally did get a referral, which is what led me to that Costco and that fitter, who then referred me to her mentor.

After 6 months of going from pillar to post.

@chrisb Thank you, that is the one NYC Costco that I haven’t been to yet. All 3 of them are an hour or more away!! They are in out of the way areas (where Costco could have the space for a huge store and parking). The parking is hugely expensive in the East Harlem one. Well, it’s NYC!

I use public transport. That’s why i tend to go to the Brooklyn Costco. It’s close to the D.

@chrisb

That makes sense. The Manhattan one is way out of the way, and not especially close to the subway. The Rego Park one in Queens is out of the.way, but at least it’s not too far from the R.

It’s good to know the Brooklyn one is near the D. But how are the fitters there? Or do you only go for supplies and filter changes?

Can you tell me who you see, or saw, at the E.117th St. Costco and how good is he or she? You can respond privately, of course.

It’s been many years since I saw a fitter at the Manhattan one. My impression of Costco fitters is that they do a good initial set-up, but anything after that is pretty minimal. The one exception was at the Brooklyn Costco several years ago when the fitter was just finishing up her education to become an audiologist. She spent a considerable amount of time tweaking things.
