Nucleus Smart new version won’t connect to standard HI in other ear

Yesterday The Nucleus Smart app connected to and controlled my (Nucleus 8) and my ReSound Omnia, at same time.

Today a completely new version of the app has been installed. It has a new look and the first step which cannot be avoided is “forget this device” in Accessibility and starting all over. Whatever I do I cannot get the app to connect to the Omnia.

Fortunately my iPhone can pair to both, so I can stream to both and control them from the Accessibility settings, including selecting mini mic and TV, but not using Nucleus Smart app, which is more convenient.

Version number of new app is 7.0.260200.654

Anyone else?

Thanks. My Nucleus 8 has same model number and firmware version as yours.

I don’t know if the old version has the same feature but I can submit problem report and diagnostics from the app, so I have done that.

Do you have an update waiting, perhaps? I manually refresh for updates so maybe see them a day or two earlier than leaving to automatic update.

Thanks, I checked it both yesterday and today - no update available.

Cumbersome, I know. However, I also in case of my Phonak Audéo Infinio Sphere and new myPhonak app update I deliberately forgot Bluetooth connection, uninstall myPhonak app, restart my smartphone and then reinstall myPhonak app. So it's quite often troublesomeness.

I'm just going to highlight this topic for Cochlear users: @Raudrive, @Deaf_piper, @ssa, @studio.prawns_0q, @nicmger

I apologise - I recall another cochlear users. By the way, maybe there's a good idea to make possibility to find a groups? Another for , another for CI (and subgroups like Cochlear, Med-El, Advanced Bionics, possibly Envoy in 5he future)?

My NS app version is 7.0.260101.4

I’m struggling to comprehend that there are so many different versions amongst members.

I agree there has to be an easier way to find the group you want.

This new forum is not working for me at all on my iPhone. It’s constantly wanting me to sign in. When I do sign in I still have adds.

I am now back home and have had a prolonged attempt to pair my non- hearing aid with the new version of the app. Failed. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, rebooted phone etc etc ...the new app just does not see my non-CI ...and I think I now understand why not.

I said earlier it was a ReSound Omnia, which it physically is, but it identifies as an Amplifon R 5 OM 13T, which is the Amplifon rebadged version of the Omnia. It worked perfectly yesterday with the previous version of Nucleus Smart. I know I am using the new app correctly because if I fire up my old ReSound Enzo Mk3 it is detected straight away by the new app, but with a red message "not compatible"

So I am convinced the new version just does not detect the Amplifon...whether by deliberately or unintentionally, who knows.

Fortunately I can do everything in Accessibility settings but it is a bit clunky compared to the Nucleus app.

I will contact my audiologist at the Nottingham Auditory Implant centre on Monday and see whether they think there is any prospect of the Amplifon being made compatible again, or whether I have to buy a new Resound aid.

Any advice about best Resound HA for bi-modal use with N8?

I think it's probably a matter of firmware upgrade of Amplifon hearing aid.

BUT...!

Try to reset your hearing aid. Perhaps it need to "forget" faulty Bluetooth connections.

I'm not a fan of Resound hearing aids, because they don't provide me function with N8 like 4 mic beamforming, etc. And their denoising is far behind Phonak's Infinio Sphere DNN efficiency, which works even monaurally. Binaural streaming isn't priority to me, because I stream to only to make my rehabilitation more effective, because brain is lazy and tries to listen mainly through an "easier" ear.

If binaural streaming is important to you:

  1. Resound Enzo IA (not sure, and it's older Vivia technology)
  2. Resound Sensi.

However I'm not sure if Resound activated it yet in HAs mentioned above.

However studying the link2 in the new Nucleus Smart app, the Omnia is in the section labelled “ Compatible legacy ReSound smart solutions”, as is my Enzo Quattro. No additional updates or enhancements are planned for legacy.

(The asterisk note in the link also says that only the Omnia is supported for bimodal control in the Nucleus Smart app, which explains why the app detects my Enzo but says not compatible).

So I am thinking it is probably time to update to a current ReSound , which are shown in the link above as Sensia bimodal, Enzo IA bimodal and Nexia.

streaming and control of both aids in the App are very important to me. I suspect that the Phonak Infinio would not provide these, but maybe wrong? I guess ReSound are not going to publish a list of competitor hearing aids even if they are fully compatible.

Interesting, I didn't know previously that there is special model for solution, which isn't the same as ordinary:

  1. Resound Sensia ≠ Resound Sensia Bimodal
  2. Resound Enzo IA ≠ Resound Enzo IA Bimodal

This is similar to ordinary Naida Marvel, which isn't the same ae Naida Link Marvel for bimodal working with sound processor.

I understand. I my case I wouldn't get much progress in rehabilitation If I were to stream binaurally. YMMV.

I am not sure what do you mean? Phonak don't have cooperation with Cochlear, so there is different app.

Streaming binaurally is impossible unless using Cochlear Wireless phone clip, but there is differences in latencies at least in smartphone.

In Windows PC theoretically there are software who could artificially equalise latencies, but this is cumbersome.

It does seem odd that the Ampliphon aid linked but won't with a NS app update.

As mentioned contacting Ampliphon might help. I would lean towards Cochlear for clarification. It was the update that caused the issue.

Have you tried removing the NS app from your phone, forget the processor and aid on the phone, boot the phone and then reload the NS app and go through normal pairing of the processor and aid.

I have found going through this process after most big updates concerning the phone gets things cleared up.

Thanks @Bimodal_user and @Raudrive . I have restarted the aids, the phone, uninstalled app, reinstalled, "forget this device" etc etc The new app does not detect the Amplifon. Tried on a second phone as well. I have been using MFIA aids since they launched in 2015 and have had many episodes of difficult and failed pairing, so I count myself very experienced in the things that can go wrong and how to get back on track. I have never failed before. I have now tried everything that has ever worked in the past, more than once.

I also noticed in the compatibity link the implied difference between "Sensia" and "Sensia ". I have never heard of a difference before and I am a bit sceptical, but will phone ReSound about that next week.

Rehab is not an issue for me. My cochlear is by far my dominant ear and works extremely well, there is no risk of my brain not using the , in favour of the Amplifon. I can manage quite well without the Amplifon in the other ear but it does add some fullness to sound and seems more natural, so I am keen to have it.

What I meant about the Phonak was that I doubt I will achieve full bimodal use with a Nucleus 8, with both devices controlled by the one Nucleus Smart app. I think your reply confirms that if I got a Phonak to replace the Amplifon I would have to use a separate app to control it which would be a big backward step for me.

If you have uninstalled your both hearing devises, I’m guessing you have disconnected the link your connected on the mapping computer. Go back to your AuD and get your linked again on the mapping computer. Good luck.

Thanks @Deaf_piper. Going through the “Forget this device” routine in Accessibility settings removes them from the phone, but does not destroy the pairing set up by the Audiologist. So I can still reconnect them to the same (or different) phone, and they will still be paired for use.

Fortunately the controls available in Accessibility settings enable me to do just about everything I used to do the Nucleus Smart app, eg switch stream devices and control volumes etc.

Last year I had to replace my Amplifon aid and I had to go back to the Cochlear audiologist to pair the replacement with my Nucleus 8.

I am in the UK and I have to have a different audiologist for my NHS Cochlear Nucleus 8 and the privately supplied Amplifon. However only the NHS Cochlear audiologist can do the pairing for bimodal use.

You've got the point perfectly. In my case, it is the ear with the that is dominant.

Ok, I see that we interpret use a little differently. For you, it's mainly using controls in the same app. For me, that means mainly wirelessly coupling HA and sound processor to activate advanced features such as 4-mic beamforming or the equivalent of "Speech in 360°".

Thanks again. For me “” means two things. The main one is simultaneous streaming to both ears, which i still have. The secondary one is controlling both aids in the same app, which I have lost with the new app.

I know nothing about 4-mic beam forming, which sounds good. Are there any options to have that with my two bimodal requirements? I suspect not unless any of the current ReSound aids have 4-mic beam forming.

There is no new phone. I just mentioned that to make the point that after unpairing, you can repair with a different phone if you want. In fact I did pair them to a second phone I have to see if the new app detected the Amplifon on another phone…which it didn’t. So I have repaired them with my normal phone.
