Nucleus Smart new version won’t connect to standard HI in other ear
48 replies930 viewsLast reply
Yes absolutely. That is not what is preventing detection of the Amplifon. I am not trying to connect to two phones at the same time. Always unpair from one phone before attempting to pair with another, or it won't work!
Curiously the new app changes the normal process by requiring the aids are unpaired from the phone before it will do anything. Previously the process was pair with the phone then the app. Now you pair with the app then the phone.

I know nothing about 4-mic beam forming, which sounds good. Are there any options to have that with my two bimodal requirements? I suspect not unless any of the current ReSound aids have 4-mic beam forming.
No, that feature is only in Naida Marvel bilaterally or bimodally Naida CI Marvel + Naida Link Marvel .
Resound for now offers that only when patient has HA on both ears, no CI.
I don't know, perhaps they will add that feature in Resound Sensi or Enzo IA Bimodal.

Interesting, I didn't know previously that there is special model for bimodalsolution, which isn't the same as ordinary:
- Resound Sensia ≠ Resound Sensia
- Resound Enzo IA ≠ Resound Enzo IA Bimodal
I had a conversion with ReSound UK Technical Support this morning. What I learned was:-
1. Yes 'Sensia' and 'Sensia Bimodal' are different products, available in UK in October currently being trialled in US. The difference is that the standard Sensia has features which only work when two Sensias are being used, so won't apply in a bimodal Cochlear situation. Hence the Sensia Bimodal does not have the AI features. When I suggested this would make the Sensia Bimodal cheaper he would not comment!
2. The same is true between the Enzo and Enzo Bimodal.
3. The Nexia does not have the AI features so there is no separate "bimodal' model.
4. The Sensia bimodal would not offer any advantage over the Nexia for my bimodal use.
5. The Enzo is a super high power option, with large unit (I know this well as I had three pairs between 2015 and 2023!). The high power tends to have less speech clarity so unless high power is essential the smaller Nexia would be better. I obtained an improvement going from Enzo to Omnia for this reason.
I also spoke to Cochlear Customer services about the dropping of Amplifon support from the latest app. She was not surprised it had happened, but couldn't say whether it was policy or accidental. She suggested I send a email with detailed question in case it was unintentional.
I am making appointment with the NAIP (Nottingham Auditory Implant Programme) to discuss the situation and my options with my Cochlear audiologist.

So it seems that I was right that only Infinio Sphere or Eon Sphere offer monaural denoising...?

It's all depend how good is in providing amplification at 4-10 kHz range, especially 6-8 kHz. Usually BTEs have problem with that (this is why I would trial Phonak Naida PR or SP, but not UP).
That problem with 6-8 kHz was also in Phonak SDS 5.0 UP receiver, which was solved in Infinio SDS 6.0 UP, which counterintuitively has even better frequency response than P receiver, which is great.
For me, inventing a receiver which could provide strong gain at 3 to 10-12 kHz would be probably better improvement than any better AI than current Infinio or Eon.
I wouldn't write off Enzo IA - on one condition: in it should provide at least the same high frequency amplification.
However, regarding clarity, I may not take something into account yet, maybe it isn't only high frequency gain factor. Perhaps someone from the professionals could chime in.

Regarding the OG post, I was able to connect my N7 and Omnia earlier this morning after the update; albeit after two attempts to "forget" and reconnect both from the app side and iOS side.
For the Amplifon support I think it might've been intentional. At the end of the day Smart Hearing Alliance is a partnership between Cochlear and ReSound, I also think Cochlear and ReSound didn't really expect people to pair Jabras and Amplifon 'white labelled' ReSound devices in the app so someone had to push for such a change.
I am surprised that your audiologist was able to connect the Amplifon to the Nucleus. Jabras were briefly 'allowed' to be connected but (from what I read before on this forum) it was 'patched' after one Jabra firmware update.
For some reason they are trying to make life harder for people with the rebranded ReSound with whole thing.
4. The Sensia bimodal would not offer any advantage over the Nexia for my bimodal use.
I believe that the only improvement Sensia brings to bimodals is being able to stream (AFAIK it was disabled completely for Nexia when connected bimodally to a CI).
Maybe they simply had some limitations with how implemented in Nexia for bimodals and now they've fixed them with Sensia.
One can infer from this one footnote is that once Cochlear pushes auracast support we'd be able to enjoy auracast streams binaurally.

Thanks @theonlybyte . I fear you are right about the Amplifon being dropped deliberately so resigning myself to replacing it. But will not rush, partly to wait and see what the Cochlear response is, partly because I am still with the Amplifon and managing control quite well using Accessibility settings.
The final reason is that the Sensia bimodal should be available in October in the UK. The Smart Hearing Alliance describes the Nucleus 8 with Sensia micro Bimodal as their premium bimodal solution, so might be a better option notwithstanding what Resound Technical support said about the Nexia.

3. The Nexia does not have the AI features so there is no separate "bimodal' model.
This statement is incorrect. A quick search shows the Nexa Nucleus and Kanso do use with their compatible hearing aid.

Is there some confusion here between “Nexa” and “Nexia? I was referring to the “Nexia” as mentioned in the compatibility link I gave earlier. I can’t see “Nexia” mentioned in your link. The context of my convo was use with the Nucleus 8 and the Nexa wasn’t mentioned.
I may have put words in the mouth of the Resound Technical support person. What I understood was that the Sensia had AI features that only worked when a Sensia was being used in both ears, and that this doesn’t apply to the Nexia. It may be that Nexia does have AI features but ReSound decided not to make a separate bimodal version without the AI features.
EDIT I see the “Cochlear Nucleus 8 Nexa” is a Cochlear processor for use with a Nexia conventional aid. Maybe this has AI features as in your link. I also see the Nucleus 8 Nexa processor requires a different implant, so that ship has sailed!

That's scene classifier. I think it has trained during manufacturing process using since SCAN in Nucleus 6.
But I'm not sure if it couplings its SCAN scene classifier with ReSound . I thinks it's not with Resound Nexia (which offers only simultaneous streaming to both +HA and simplified volume adjustment). Not sure if it will appear in Resound Sensia and Resound IA Bimodal.
However, still, Resound doesn't have monaural denoising capacity like Phonak Infinio/Eon Spheres.

There is now a post on the Reddit thread I linked earlier from a Danalogic /Nucleus 8 user for the whom the old version of Nucleus Smart worked fine but not the new version.
I had a useful session with my Amplifon audiologist yesterday. As @Bimodal_user suggested there was indeed a firmware update available.
Also, before I got the Cochlear in 2024 I was using two of these Amplifon branded Omnias. After I got the I just stopped using the right hand one and the left was paired with my Nucleus 8, and has worked fine for two years. Yesterday the audiologist could see that my left Amplifon was still linked (obviously not paired) in some way with the discarded right one. He removed this link.
With these two changes hopes of success were high!.... but after many attempts he agreed that the app is just not detecting the Amplifon.
He was more hopeful than I am that Cochlear will correct the situation for Amplifon and Danalogic with an update. I am happy to wait to see if this happens as the ReSound Sensia won't be available in the UK until October, and meantime I can use Accessibility settings.

I am confused. If this is true, Sensia 7 and 9 do have . I just read this:
ReSound releases the Sensia in three distinct technology tiers: Sensia 9 (Premium), Sensia 7 (Advanced), and Sensia 5 (Standard). [1]
- Sensia 9 Bimodal: This is the tier that features the full, fully-automated AI Deep Neural Network () denoising. It automatically senses your surroundings and engages the AI to isolate the voice you are facing.
- Sensia 7 Bimodal: The AI features are still on the device, but they do not engage automatically. You have to manually activate the AI speech-in-noise booster via a button on the hearing aid or through the smartphone app.
- Sensia 5 Bimodal: This basic tier does not have the AI DNN processing engine built in at all

Cochlear released a new version of the Nucleus Smart app today and it DOES detect my Amplifon branded ReSound Omnia...Hurrah!
Unfortunately connection to it fails at the last stage, despite multiple attempts with slight variations.
At least I know now that the fail to detect the Amplifon in the previous version was unintentional.

This nightmare of a NS app arrived on my iPhone overnight… Being not tech savvy myself I’m not touching this app. As my ear devices are currently paired to my phone I don’t need this particular app right now..
When I get myself into the land of the living, it’s only 7 am now. The first thing I’m going to do is do a full backup of my iPhone in iTunes, yep old fashioned.. Then if the new app goes to hell and back, I can just reinstall my recent backup, then I up and running again I hope!

I updated the NS app a few days ago. Granted I use an Android phone. No issues at all.
A few things were moved around but not difficult to find. I do like the font and lighting changes, much easier to read and see.

Cochlear have confirmed the new app’s problem with my Amplifon branded Omnia, and told me to use the Smart3D app for it and the Nucleus Smart app for my Nucleus 8….which is marginally better than triple clicking the side button to get to the controls in Accessibility. Full streaming to both is working fine. Fortunately I don’t need to use the controls very often, mostly just changing source to TV or multi mic.

I’ve been activated over 7 years now. I’ve always had to use 2 apps the NS and 3D app to alter/control both my and . It’s a right royal pain in the proverbial!

There might be a difference an apps from Australia and the USA. It seems Deaf_piper and I talked about this a while back.
I have a friend who was N8 with a Resound One 9 linked with the N8. He does have the Resound app and the Nucleus Smart app on his iPhone. He uses only the Nucleus Smart app to control both the Resound One and his N8. In his case I do not know if the resound app on his phone is needed, he didn't use it.
