Domes, molds and Jabra 30

I have had my Jabra 30’s for a few weeks now and have been using them with power domes. I have generally been satisfied but my fitter at Costco suggested that I get acrylic ear molds so I did. I picked them up yesterday and the fit was excellent so she did the . I really do not like the sound. It is extremely sharp and unnatural. I know she made several adjustments and mentioned that she was able to give me more amplication. The sound levels were fine with the power domes. My guess is she has pushed to much of some frequencies into the devices but my understanding of this is very limited. I am going to make another appointment but does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone had similar issues. I would like to stay with the molds because they are so easy to insert and feel comfortable.

I’ve only been wearing ’s for a couple of years, but each time I’ve had them adjusted, changed or modified for better hearing, invariably, it seems, the results were too loud, too sharp and unnatural. However, after some time, I seemed to become accustomed to the new sounds and they became “natural." My advice is to give them a couple of weeks and see if that might happen for you. You also might try reducing the volume a little for a bit and see if that helps.

Try clicking on the Noise Filter in the App first thing in the morning. (Recommended by my fitter, btw.) It may not be needed later in the day after you acclimate. This is what helped me adjust - and that was After I had my Costco fitter tone down the volume the 2nd time. (The first time was before I completed my initial fitting.)

Now I generally lower the volume a click or two using the app or phone volume button first thing. Later in the day, or if I’m leaving the house, I usually run it back to the default setting.

I’m in custom domes (and have been for years), and like them alot. I think the newer more powerful receivers are a little too much for those of us that got used to the silence.

But jtl’s got a six-month return period from the date of purchase at Costco, at least in the US, and Costco’s been consistently good at honoring that. You’re right, you should never let that return period lapse if you’re not happy, but these new settings should get some more time to see if the brain adjusts–sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t–before making a decision.

Brightness, sharpness, hotness have been a common beef from Jabra Enhance Pro 30 owners, but I actually welcome it in mine in the All Around program (it’s not an issue for me in the other programs, such as Music, which I do use, too), because the speech clarity is so much better in All Around than what I’ve enjoyed with other aids for many years. I know it’s not accurate sound; I just want to understand people speaking. This is very much an individual decision.

What I have noticed is that the sound is much worse using the molds which I think are blocking too much of the outside environment. Then there is the issue of the fitter increasing the levels. Anyway, thanks for the comment. I have an appointment in a couple of weeks and I may just tell them to order a vented pair of molds and use the power domes in the meantime. I think, unless the fitters have hearing issues and wear ’s, they have a difficult time understanding our issues. My hearing loss on paper says I should need molds and certain power levels but it is too much for me. I liked the sound of the power domes, just not the fit. I think the HA’s are good. I sampled the Phillips in the store and did not like them as well as the Jabra’s.

I played around with the volume settings and the filters to no avail. It has something to do with the molds and the programed settings. I know this because the power domes and the previous settings did not give me this kind of over the top brightness and sharpness.

I have several months to return them but I think the issue is fitment not the . I am working on a solution. I may drive Costco nuts in the interim.

I agree. There shouldn’t be a radical change just because you went to custom domes and the corresponding receivers. If your fitter is unable to correct, go to a different fitter - possibly even a different store.

@Blue_Pearl1 has a couple of threads that show a different, more experienced fitter resolving a Jabra 30 issue that went on for 6 months.

I have the jabra and the molds. Interesting thing with is that my Audi did not like the REM settings for me (and she says she doesn’t often like it for patients) because of some of these. I kept it in initially as she knows I program myself and I can remove it - and honestly I do agree. I found the sounds to be way to sharp. I lowered the 6-8k range some (I forget how much) and after some trial and error got it much better. You’ll probably be better with the rem settings removed and it set back to the + default.
