I was fitted with the Soundgear Amp hearing aids Friday 7/10/26. I didn’t notice the hissing noise until I left the store and was driving back home with music on. The music sounded really bad and the hissing sound was pretty loud. I fixed the ride home by using music mode which sounded good.
When I got home I created a custom program using the equalizer to turn down the mid frequency and the hissing was reduced. I saved that program and that is what I’m using now till my next appointment. The hissing is in all programs including Edge Mode. Music mode doesn’t have it.
My question is I used Gemini to provide a solutions in pro fit for the hissing which is below. Did Gemini get the solution right? Hopefully someone with pro fit experience will acknowledge this. Thank you
Fixing the Background Hiss
The background hiss you're experiencing is typically a mix of the hearing aid's internal circuit floor noise and the over-amplification of very soft, low-level ambient sounds (like a refrigerator, AC fan, or computer hum).
The reason you don't hear it in the Music program is because music programs intentionally lower or completely turn off noise reduction and expansion algorithms to preserve raw, natural acoustic dynamics. Because you already figured out that lowering the mid-frequencies in the equalizer softens the hiss, you can permanently fix this in Pro Fit using two specific adjustments:
Adjust the Quiet (Expansion) Setting
Pro Fit features an expansion algorithm specifically designed to keep the hearing aids quiet in silent environments by turning down sounds that fall below the threshold of human speech.
Where to go: In the left navigation menu, go to Fitting > Sound Manager.
What to change: Look for the Quiet setting row. You want to increase the level of activity or noise control for Quiet (move it up a tier or click the up arrows). This makes the expansion more aggressive at dropping out that low-level floor hiss without sacrificing your speech clarity.
Lower the Gain for "Soft" Mid-Frequencies
If adjusting the Quiet setting doesn't fully eliminate the hiss, you can manually target the specific frequencies you tinkered with in your custom EQ.
Where to go: Go to Fitting > Fine Tuning.
What to change: Look at the rows for Soft Sounds (the 50 dB input line). Navigate to the mid-frequency channels (specifically around 1000 Hz to 2000 Hz) and drop the gain down by 1 to 3 dB.
Note: Make sure you only change the "Soft" row. Leave the "Moderate" and "Loud" rows alone so you don't lose speech volume.
