Or are you saying that small as possible for these is really a half shell?
Yes. A small half shell. MAYBE close to an in some big ears, but no smaller.
What are your best thresholds?

I’m not sure what you mean by best thresholds. I added data as the combined lowest values over the past couple years. That didn’t work so here it is instead. Thresholds13 My range can be about 10-15 worse without a trend.

Thanks, interesting. What do you experience as occlusion?
I’m just personally interested because I have a low frequency loss and a tough time with hearing aids which I suspect is because I have good hearing out to 16 kHz which the hearing aids block.

I assume damping EHF even with normative age adjusted loss is not ideal.
I’m not sure it’s occlusion that’s the issue. How can I rule that in or out? My brain is used to my loss and amplifying some while plugging the rest of the sound can seem worse, especially in more complex environments. Domes seem worse for this than large effective venting. Maybe I could adjust eventually.
Perhaps it doesn’t matter where the loss is so much as that at a higher frequency there is less loss. Some reverse slope aspect at any part of the spectrum is more than the current tech can handle.
Have you tried some of the more unusual accoustic couplings such as parallel venting? Do those work with or only ? How does AAP2 work for you?

@Neville thank you for confirming! I received mine but they’re the full shells and my audiologist and their Phonak rep indicated that these can’t be made any smaller which completely contradicts Phonak’s marketing and even YT reviews showing the versions. Highly frustrating!

You must have little ears or need big receivers. I’ve seen some physically pretty small half shells.

I have seen them in person. If someone is wearing them, and you are looking at them head on, you can’t even see that they are wearing them. I have no idea how they perform, but I don’t really remember seeing a product so small. I know the custom market is relatively small today, but I think part of the reason for that is there is nothing discreet about most customs. I wonder if this converts more people over?

Occlusion appears as sort of a boominess primarily on your own voice and your internal sounds (walking, chewing). It will be present regardless of whether the hearing aids are on or off because it’s a physical effect. If you turn your hearing aids off and keep them in, is the effect still there? If not, then the boominess is a gain issue. You also don’t want to confuse occlusion with just plugging/muffling of sound, which is a lack-of-gain issue and typically gets worse if the hearing aids are in and off but better if you turn the volume up (and then ideally find the frequencies that are getting muffled and replace them specifically).

I’d love to know how these work out for you. I currently have the Virto P90 and I am in New Zealand and was scouring our local Phonak site to get more info on them, but they are not listed. After speaking with Sonova they tell me the Virto Infinio R will not be available here until January - which may work out well for me as the audiology chain I go to has a Pay as You Hear option which gives me a free upgrade every 3 years, and my 3 years is up at the end of November.
Please keep us updated!

Pay as You Hear
Pay as you hear sounds like hearing aids for profound losses should be cheap…
Edit: Wait, wait, I get it. Like “pay as you go” rather than “pay what you can”.

Sorry Neville - I should have been more clear. “Pay as You Hear” is the clinic’s terminology, but yes it is pay as you go. After the government contributions and subsidies I pay a subscription fee of around NZD$100 per month.

I will do for sure. I’m getting them on Monday all being well and I’ve gone whole hog of getting a roger on system as well as the hearing in my left ear is so bad now. Even though the hearing aid amplifies the sound, I’m still just hearing jibberish with the aid due to the Hydrops, so figure roger will help with listening to the TV, computer etc. I like my current virto titaniums but they are a bit limited so we’ll see what these are like.

@Xonic83, do you think that Virto R () would be good when user want use them during a contact sport, like Brazilian Ju-Jitsu, karate, or so?
What have your experiences been like after using it for almost a month?

Hi. yes sorry I was meant to post a review here, but life got a bit busy with a new baby on the way and due in 2 weeks ![]()
So, I have to say, of all the hearing aids I@ve tried, I love these the most. weirdly, even though I have lots of bass freq loss, I’ve removed the bass from the proscription, or rather my audi has. it just sounded muffled and clarity was all being masked, because the amount I had to put back I think was making the sound weird in the aids themselves.
Anyway, things I like:
The charge lasts 16h for me with 8h streaming from roger and changing streaming with my phone. In fact I’ve not run the batteries down yet.
I love that my audi can remote control them so I don’t have to go into the clinic for him to make adjustments. When I do see him face to face, he can adjust them without huge cables hanging out of my ears, could never do this with the titaniums ![]()
The sound clarity is lovely and I love the fact you can adjust all the EQ and noise cancelation, speech focus and dynamic response from the phone.
They feel great in the ears. Since I’ve now connected roger v3 to them, I hook that directly into my computer and I work with these in. If colleagues are bieng noisy, I just turn down the outside noise and hear roger better. if I want to speak to someone, I do the reverse.
Overall, I really really like these. They are not perfect but they’re as close as I’ve come so far.
Now, things I don’t like and to anser the question of contact sport.
The biggest issue I have with these ’s is wind. Yes, I know you can put on wind block but that will break my sound in other ways. When I’m in a windy environment with these, it is absolute hell. My wife is knitting me a little headband which will go over them and hopefully bllock some of the wind
I never had this problem with the Titaniums as they sat further in the ear.
Finally, since they do stick further out of the canal, they’re much more prone to being banged by my little boys hands for example or if I bump into something. When that happens, it doesn’t hurt physically but I get a really loud bang in my ear. Honestly I’d be careful wearing these in contact sport in case that happens.
I have seen ear guards though that you can wear for boxing and ju Jitsu. YOu could put the aids in, then these guards on top and that would be fine I think. You could even set the EQ on the app to deal with the weird sound of having the guard on top.
Hope that helped, any questions about the Virto R please feel free to ask I’ve done a lot of playing with them now.
