Starkey Omega basic help!

Hi to one and all!

I’m new to this forum and have had hearing aids for only about six weeks. I chose Starkey Omega aids and my audiologist has been helping me to set them up for this time. I’m not totally convinced of her ability with these new on the market aids.

I still need a lot of help with basic questions and despite having looked around on internet, I can’t seem to find much on line help nor a specialised site by Starkeys. Any help to find a site replying to a lot of basic questions would be much appreciated.

For example, my ha’s are paired with my android phone and I can use them on the phone but I still don’t know how to answer the phone using the hearing aids. I think I have to tap some part of the hearing aids but the audiologist doesn’t seem to know where or how…. Surely there must be a site that explains this?

Welcome to the forum!

AIUI, it should be a tap on the ear that’s enough to tell the phone to pick up. I’ve never tried it with success - it might be a setting that your audiologist has to programme in.

You could use trial and error by getting a friend to call you and wait for you to play about by pressing different items - eg behind ear, a double tap, and so on.

Thanks for this reply Freezerman. There is no problem with the connection with the phone and I have been able to have phone calls without any problem. The difficulty is to get the phone to allow me to answer. This may sound strange but the phone can be in another part of my apartment and if I could pick up directly using the reply by the hearing aids I would not have to run about the apartment looking for the phone! I have had phone calls with the phone some distance away from me.

Thank you PhilCreighton for this reply. I suspect that this is the way to go, but it will probably take a while for me to learn the right tap! :grin: I am absolutely astonished to see how poor the Starkey sites are on information of this kind, given the price of these hearing aids!:thinking: I have already spent some time on the web to no avail…. This forum seems to be the best bet and helpful people here the best solution!:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I think that should work.

I have the Starkey Edge with a pixel 6a.

I cannot tap to answer.

Did you go into the app and see if it needs to to be assigned to an aid?

5.3, A2DP, LE.

This is the Bluetooth I come up with.

I think you need HAP Bluetooth.

It may not be compatible for tap to answer.

Thanks once again Freezerman. My mobile has Bluetooth 5.3 A2DP and has been paired to the aids. It seems to connect without difficulty, though I have several questions about this (such as problems with the volume) but which I do not wish to pollute this thread with. I remain with the “tap to answer” problem which remains partly unsolved until I can test it using PhilCreighton’s suggestions…

I am rather disappointed by the problems posed by the lack of information on the Starkey Omega system.

This is mainly a Phonak forum. Followed by Oticon, Costco then everyone else.

Like I said I think you’re phone is not compatible with tap to answer. It doesn’t appear to have the right Bluetooth.

You need what I think they call LEA. You have LE Bluetooth.

There are several threads explaining this, I’ll try to find one and post a link.

Ok I went to the Starkey phone compatibility page.

According to the page a Samsung Galaxy S24+ will do tap. It’s supposed to do which is what you want.

When I went to GSM Arena’s site, it did not list LE Audio. So I don’t know.

Your going to have to push your audiologist to find out how to make it work.

If your Audi is like mine, that won’t be easy.

Thanks once again for taking the trouble to document the problem! Yes, I’m afraid that my Audi is a bit like yours..:expressionless_face: These omega hearing aids by Starkey are very recent and she doesn’t seem to know a lot about the details of the way they work. My bad luck.

I should add that, after quite a lot of wasted time trying to understand the innumerable categories and sub-categories of the Starkey application on my phone, I discovered a sub-section which allowed me to ask a question and send an email to Starkey. I am waiting for a reply….

Well, in desperation, I tried Perplexity IA and the answer was very clear! I’ll post it here for anyone else who might have my problem:

To reply to a mobile phone call using Starkey Omega hearing aids, you can answer hands-free through the hearing aids when your phone is connected via Bluetooth. When a call comes in, simply short press the button on either hearing aid to answer the call; if you want to decline or end a call, press and hold the button for three seconds. The call audio streams directly to both ears, and your voice is picked up by the hearing aid microphones, so you do not need to hold your phone to your ear. These features are accessible with compatible Apple iOS and Android devices, and must be activated in the settings or app if supported by your specific Omega

But it works perfectly with bluetooth. I have had no problem receiving phone calls using the hearing aids. The only problem was how to answer directly from the hearing aids without having the phone in my hand. When I answer from the mobile phone holding it in my hand, the sound is directly accessible on the hearing aids. There is a secondary problem which is how to increase the volume of the sound without touching the phone (if it is in a different room from me). I will see if Perplexity can help me on that!

Can you talk into your aids and they hear you loud and clear?

Yes, Freezerman, once I have replied to the call, either by pressing on the phone to reply, or by getting the hearing aids to reply (my problem in this forum), I don’t need the phone any more. The hearing aids function as a microphone and speaker. I can walk around the apartment and carry on the conversation. I read somewhere that the distance between the aids and the phone cannot be greater than 200 meters (=200yards) much more than I need at home! I don’t have enough experience to feel confident in adjusting the volume yet though…I’m afraid of accidentally hanging up! :rofl: I need to learn a lot more. The Starkey application on the phone is helpful and I’m beginning to learn to use it. As we saw, Perplexity can be useful too !!:blush:

Are you sure that you can’t use the hearing aids the way I do? Just leave the phone when you have answered and move away. You might be surprised to see that this works. I don’t see why not as you have hearing aids that are very similar to mine…. Good luck anyway!
